The Vietnam War was a long, costly, and divisive conflict between the communist government of North Vietnam and South Vietnam, which had help from its principal ally, the United States. The war was especially intensified by the ongoing Cold War between the United States and Soviet Union. With multiple wars and conflicts to fight and keep soldiers safe and protected, the Military, Navy, and Air Force required all resources, including marijuana which many soldiers relied on in Vietnam.

During the Vietnam War, cannabis was consumed because the plant grew in the wild in Vietnam. For that reason, many soldiers had their first experience smoking the drug, and it helped them continue fighting, “You get really stoned…. Then, you know, who like, who cares about the war?” Many military leaders also encouraged cannabis consumption when there were problems among their soldiers. Unlike alcohol, which was still the drug of choice, marijuana kept the soldiers mellow and focused, which helped resolve conflicts between men. When the soldiers smoked together, they used an unorthodox method involving a firearm by packing a bowl of marijuana in a shotgun chamber, soldiers smoked long drags together. The list of Kenyans who want the legalization of the growth and use of marijuana seems to be growing, with Kibra Member of Parliament Ken Okoth now joining the ranks of those who want it decriminalized. Okoth has written to national assembly speaker Justin Muturi seeking for facilitation in preparing of the marijuana control bill 2018. Okoth proposes the setting up of research institutions that will lead to policy development done on the growth and use of the stimulants for medical, industrial and recreational purposes, with special focus on preservation of intellectual property rights for Kenyan research. Marijuana was banned in Kenya during the British colonial east Africa protectorate under the opium ordinance

Marijuana is one of the oldest known psychoactive drugs that has been used for thousands of years by a number of different cultures and religions. The drug has been used all across the world for all different purposes, like in Ancient Egypt for example, cannabis was used as a pain-reliever, and traces of it is found in the remains of several mummies. Marijuana was also grown and consumed in Early America, where colonists cultivated sativa L, which contains less than 1% THC, not nearly enough for anyone to get high. The Mayan people was another civilization across the world that grew and consumed cannabis as part of its culture as well.

The Mayan people actually grew large marijuana farms that were only just recently discovered, as they were previously mistaken for pyramids, “They’re not Maya pyramids. They’re either abandoned cornfields, or active marijuana fields.” Since the Mayan people had so many marijuana farms, it’s fair to assume that they consumed the plant like they consumed tobacco, by grinding the flower into a powder to make a powerful alcoholic drink. There is also plenty of evidence of this in much of their art, which has a long suspected history of smoking depicted pictorially on murals, showing Mayans used cannabis for all purposes.
