Smoking a joint seems to be the most popular way of using marijuana.

Weed-infused cookies, brownies, and candies — called edibles — have also gained some popularity among recreational users. There’s even a prescription medication that contains THC, called dronabinol, and is sold as Marinol in the U.S.

But Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a leading neurosurgeon and chief medical correspondent for CNN, says that, medically speaking, these are not the optimal ways to consume cannabis.

Dr. Gupta recently released a documentary, “WEED,” exploring the benefits of medical marijuana and its general effects on our brains and bodies.

Why does weed make you paranoid?

Research scientist Ziva Cooper explained, “Whether it’s smoked, vaporized, [ingested] orall, the experience rests on who the person is, what that person’s experience is with cannabis beforehand — perhaps their genetic makeup, maybe their gender. But it also heavily depends on what they’re taking in.”

All cannabis consists of cannabinoids and terpenes, which work together to alter the way you feel. The compounds include THC, which is psychoactive, as well as therapeutic, and CBD, which has therapeutic effects.

Cooper claims that if an individual hasn’t tried weed ever or that frequently, they’re more likely to experience its adverse effects. That or whatever they’re ingesting is strong, or has a higher amount of THC.

The woman body naturally produces endocannabinoids, which are similar to the compounds found in cannabis. Some people have low levels of endocannabinoids due to excess stress and trauma. But research shows that weed can replace these endocannabinoids and treat PTSD and mood disorders.

When cannabis enters the brain, it affects the amygdala, which control bodily responses like fear and stress. If you’re feeling anxiety, stress or hallucinations, that means that you’re too high and that too much THC has entered your system.

Some marijuana varieties today contain levels of THC, the drug’s psychoactive compound, as high as 50 percent, compared to around 5 percent a generation ago. But as science correspondent Miles O’Brien reports, the effects of cannabis on the human brain are still relatively unknown.

Cultivating cannabis plants from seeds is an exciting journey for many enthusiasts. However, not all cannabis seeds are created equal and determining their viability is crucial for a successful growing experience. Failing at germination might not entirely be your fault and in this video, we demonstrate what types of seeds are viable and what types are not.
A visual examination is the first step in determining the potential viability of a cannabis seed. Look for seeds that have a dark, healthy coloration, as pale or light-colored seeds may indicate immaturity or poor health. Viable seeds often exhibit a mottled appearance, with a sturdy outer shell that is smooth, shiny and intact.

Size and Shape:
Another important characteristic to assess is the size and shape of the seed. Larger seeds generally have a higher chance of viability compared to smaller ones. Additionally, viable cannabis seeds are usually teardrop-shaped or slightly oval, indicating healthy development.

Hardness Test:
The next step involves performing a hardness test to evaluate the seed’s integrity. Gently squeeze the seed between your fingers. If it feels firm and does not crack or crumble under pressure, it is likely viable. Conversely, a soft or brittle seed may indicate poor viability or age.

Float Test:
The float test is a simple yet effective method to determine if a cannabis seed can germinate. Fill a glass with water and carefully drop the seed into it. Viable seeds will sink to the bottom, while non-viable ones will float or remain suspended in the water. Floating seeds are typically empty or have not developed enough to be viable.

THC is the main psychoactive component of cannabis. In this video, I discuss the effects of THC on the nervous system.

TRANSCRIPT:

THC is the main psychoactive component of cannabis, and one of a class of compounds known as cannabinoids. Cannabis tends to be relatively low in THC compared to its levels of a THC precursor, THCA. Heating the cannabis plant, however, causes the conversion of THCA to THC, which is part of the basis for heating or burning the plant for use. The effects of cannabis may vary depending on the variety of cannabis plant and its associated levels of THC and other cannabinoids, but common effects of THC include: euphoria, sedation, stimulation of appetite, impaired cognitive function, analgesia, and anxiety.

THC is thought to exert most of its effects by binding to receptors called cannabinoid receptors. There are two known cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2–both of which are g-protein coupled receptors. CB1 receptors are found throughout the nervous system, while CB2 receptors are primarily found on immune cells. THC acts as a partial agonist at cannabinoid receptors, meaning it binds to these receptors and generates a response that’s a fraction of what other substances that bind to the receptors can generate. THC interacts with a number of other targets as well, but it’s thought that its main psychoactive effects are mediated through its action at CB1 receptors.

Activation of CB1 receptors is thought to lead to the modulation of the release of various neurotransmitters. It’s not fully understood how this translates into the characteristic effects of THC, but the activation of CB1 receptors in different areas of the nervous system may partially explain the effects of the drug. CB1 receptors in areas like the cortex and hippocampus, for example, may be involved in the perceptual and cognitive effects of THC, CB1 receptors in areas like the basal ganglia and cerebellum may be associated with sedation and effects on movement, and CB1 receptors in areas like the spinal cord and brainstem may be linked to analgesic effects.

There are a few benefits to the mason jar method over decarboxylating on a baking sheet in the oven. For starters, decarbing in a mason jar significantly minimizes strong cannabis odors. Another benefit concerns the terpenes that evaporate in the process; they will stick to the glass of the jar and if you use the same jar for your infusion, you can preserve them. Finally, there is no direct contact with the air in the oven, and it is less likely that you will burn any of your cannabis during the heating process.

There are few places in the world where you can walk into a licensed shop and buy marijuana for recreational use. Uruguay is one (sold in pharmacies). Canada is another. They’re joined by 21 US states, representing 48 percent of the American population, up from zero states in 2013.

That means that in Idaho, people caught growing or selling weed face mandatory jail time and tens of thousands of dollars in fines while their counterparts next door in Washington can enroll in a state-funded mentor-ship program for cannabis business planning and development. And states like Washington are violating both US federal law which prohibits any use of marijuana, and also international law, which prohibits non-medical uses.

That’s messy. But it reflects that although large majorities agree that the criminalization of cannabis use was a mistake, there’s less consensus about how exactly to move forward.

Will Jones III, the Director of Community Engagement & Outreach at Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM), maintains that the commercialization of weed would lead to more harm than good. He prefers decriminalization instead, which removes criminal penalties, treating marijuana possession more like a traffic ticket. (Six US states have decriminalized recreational cannabis without legalizing.) However, SAM prioritizes fighting legalization and reducing drug use over promoting decriminalization.

SAM co-drafted the Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act which makes it easier to study marijuana and develop marijuana-derived drugs but without descheduling marijuana as a schedule I illicit substance. President Biden signed it into law in December of 2022.

Paul Armentano, the Deputy Director of NORML, has spent decades advocating for legalization of marijuana and says decriminalization doesn’t go far enough. NORML represents the interests of cannabis consumers and has been advocating for the removal of criminal penalties for recreational marijuana since 1970.

We thought both of their perspectives were worth hearing but didn’t want to stage a traditional debate where viewers so often come away confused about what to believe. So we created a format that would help establish a shared foundation of facts while still communicating what each of these advocates believe is the most important information to know.

In this new take on a debate, we asked both participants to identify facts that their opponent would have to concede are true. They were given an opportunity to review their adversary’s facts in advance and in a video call agreed on a set of six. In the video, you’ll see those facts presented, with each participant given the opportunity to add a “footnote” to their opponent’s facts.

The creator of LSD, Dr. Albert Hofmann, believed that ingesting tiny amounts of the drug could have therapeutic value, and so-called “microdoses” have since been proposed as a substitute for everything from Adderall to marriage counseling. Now, as more states legalize marijuana, the trend that began with hallucinogens has grown to include microdoses of THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in weed.

VICE News traveled to Portland, Oregon, to meet Ethan Ernest, creator of marijuana microdose pills called Mirth Control, which contain a fraction of the THC found in a typical joint or batch of edibles. Earnest compares Mirth Control to “open-source Xanax. Other products in the new weed microdosing category push the envelope even further with suggestions about purported medical uses.

As marijuana legalization spreads, states are looking at different ways to ensure those most affected by decades of racially biased anti-drug policies have a leg up.

Under a special program, New Jersey prioritizes granting licenses to dispensaries run by people with marijuana convictions on their records.

Lawmakers hope that by making equity a cornerstone of their newly legalized markets, those who dealt marijuana in the illegal, or “legacy,” market will be persuaded to go legit.

How America lost the war on Marijuana: Within a decade, the U.S. went from cracking down on marijuana use to becoming a $47 billion industry. But the road to having dispensaries on every corner, the smell of weed smoke freely in the air and criminal records expunged didn’t happen overnight. It took a couple of states leading the charge – Colorado and Washington in 2012 – to then ripple into near nation-wide legalization. There are now 21 states where cannabis has been legalized for recreational use. Every corner of New York City , for example, is an assault on the nostrils with people lighting up a joint as early as before or just after their morning commute. However, not everyone is on board with the marijuana revolution. Doctors and advocates have highlighted concerns about excessive use of cannabis in high risk groups, especially the youth.
