More Americans now use THC or cannabis than smoke tobacco, and a brand-new JAMA study just dropped a bombshell: healthy people who regularly smoke cannabis or eat THC edibles are showing early signs of heart disease, just like cigarette smokers. But here’s the twist: vascular function dropped by 42% in smokers, but a staggering 56% in those who took edibles. Yes, that brownie might be more dangerous than a joint.

Now, before you panic, this study only had 55 people, so we need bigger research to be sure. But if you thought edibles were the “safe” option, think again. THC – tetrahydrocannabinol – can damage the cells lining your blood vessels, making it harder for your heart to get the oxygen it needs.

She’s believed to be the first person to receive a prescription for cannabis in the UK.

Now Carly Barton has described her relief that she can take the drug without fear of repercussions.

Carly suffers constant pain after a stroke in her 20s. She was prescribed the cannabis medicine by the only kind of doctor who can do so – a specialist consultant – but it does come at a hefty cost.

A Tasmanian medicinal cannabis grower is expanding to capitalise on growing demand for the product in Australia.

About 400,000 patients have accessed legal medicinal cannabis in Australia since 2016.

Cannabis is prescribed for a range of conditions, from chronic pain to anxiety and depression.

It is not on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, so patients pay full price, but that has not dampened demand.

“I could see endocannabinoids as being a really good conduit to relieving the opioid epidemic.” Nathan Fried, assistant professor of biology, discusses the potential of medical marijuana for replacing opioids as a pain treatment.

Fried joined the Rutgers University–Camden faculty in the fall of 2018. He specializes in neuroscience and is currently studying the connections between sleep and pain, to identify opioid alternatives for chronic pain treatment.
