As your cannabis plants reach the end of the vegetative phase, you will have to flip them to transition them into the flowering stage. Flipping cannabis is one of the most important steps in the latter stages of the cannabis grow cycle. How you flip will help to determine the end result of your overall grow as, once you flip them, your plants will stop vegging and begin to concentrate all of their energy on flowering.

What does flipping cannabis mean?

Flipping cannabis to flower doesn’t literally involve flipping your plants. Flipping cannabis refers to the process of facilitating the transition from veg to flower for your plants. We call it flipping cannabis as you need to flip the photoperiod, the amount of light and dark, by altering the light cycle to give your plants 12 hours of dark

Keep in mind the kinds of yields you want or expect from your plants and provide grow space for them accordingly. In general, most plants double or triple in height after they’re flipped.

Here are things you need to know and consider when flipping:

Available space. Knowing how much space you have is crucial because you don’t want the plant to outgrow its environment.

Here’s a general rule: Marijuana plants will double or triple in height from the time you flip them until the buds sites appear. That means, if you flower a 1-foot plant, you’re going to end up with a 2 to 3-foot-tall plant. They are going to grow about an equal amount in width as well. Bear this in mind, so you can keep a proper distance between the plant and grow lamps.

Potential yield. You can get 4 ounces off of a 2 or 2.5-foot plant, but not from a 1-foot plant. This being the case, make sure that you wait until the plant is at the right size before flipping.

Flipping duration. Flipping from vegetative to flowering is switching the photoperiod, which is just a fancy word for the number of hours for the light and dark cycle. Most plants need around12 hours of uninterrupted darkness to flip. This does not happen in 1 to 3 consecutive days, but certainly within a week.

You’re going to start to see little pistils. These white hairs are going stack by the thousands and grow into what we call buds. Eventually, the buds will join and form colas. It’s good to have a lighted loop when you start seeing red hairs. It is a magnifier you can use to tell when the plants are ripe. We’ll talk about it in the next segment. See you soon!

So, now that you are starting to buy your equipment and choose the space you are growing in, it comes time to choose your cannabis grow lights. Before you choose your grow lights for cannabis, you must take into account the amount of space you have available. Some marijuana grow lights work better for small-scale grow operations while others work far better for larger setups. Different types of grow lights consume different amounts of electricity, so it is best you calculate your watt requirements before you go ahead and choose your cannabis grow lights.

With LED grow lights, cannabis grows well as LEDs provide a wide spectrum of light and basically give your plants everything they need. Furthermore, when it comes to LED grow lights, cannabis cultivators will save money in the long run as they are relatively efficient and economical grow lights. LED grow lights don’t get too hot either, which is very important when choosing your lights as some can kick out enough heat to impact your plants negatively or even burn them.

Metal Halides (MH) and High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) Lights are the two other most popular choices. They are both cheaper than LEDs when it comes to up-front costs, however, in the long-run they consume considerably more power and kick out more heat.

Watch this video presented by Kyle Kushman to learn the pros and cons of each type of grow light and get recommendations from a master grower to help you on your journey to becoming a cannabis cultivation expert!

Lights are an essential factor in determining the success of your indoor grow, but good equipment isn’t enough. You need to know how to use it and when to switch cycles. Once you understand the capability of each of these light sources, you’ll know exactly which light would suit your grow.

In the next video, we’ll help you set up and optimize your grow room. See you soon!

How to Germinate Cannabis Seeds – A Beginner's Guide with Kyle Kushman

Find out how to germinate cannabis seeds using tried and tested methods with this handy video guide from master grower Kyle Kushman. You can trust that Kyle Kushman knows the best way to germinate cannabis seeds, having been in the industry for almost three decades! There are many different methods to germinate cannabis seeds, but this guide is here to help you understand how to germinate marijuana seeds the Homegrown way, the Kyle Kushman way.

If you’re stuck figuring out how to germinate weed seeds then this video is definitely for you. When you combine America’s best seed bank with a true cultivation expert in Kyle Kushman, chances are you’re going to get information that will be both informative and helpful!

So, you want to know how to germinate marijuana seeds? We don’t blame you, this is arguably the most important step for having a successful grow.

If you don’t germinate your seeds correctly then, to put it simply, they won’t grow at all, let alone thrive. However, if you do germinate weed seeds correctly then you have taken the all-important first step in rearing successful and productive plants.

To successfully germinate cannabis seeds using the ‘paper towel’ method shown in this video, you will need:
Cannabis seeds
Water
Paper towels
A plate

Directions:

1. Pour 200 ml of purified water into the beaker. Then, add a drop of liquefied seaweed, and mix thoroughly.
2. Pour the seeds in the germination mix, and give it a little stir. Let it sit for 24 to 48 hours.
3. Prepare four (4) to six (6) sheets of plain paper towel. You need to create a bottom and top (cover) paper napkin folding; both made up of two (2) to three (3) sheets. Take the four corners in the middle, creating a two- to three-layered square fold.
4. Put one paper towel on the plate. The folded side with four triangles should be facing the plate.
5. Pour some of the water and seaweed mix on the paper towel to moisten it. Then, put the seeds on top.
6. Put the other paper towel on top as a cover. It will soak up all the extra water. Make sure there is no free-standing water under the plate.
7. Leave the plate and its contents in a warm, dark place.
8. Every 12 to 24 hours, check back to make sure the paper towels are still wet.
9. Once 48 hours have gone by, you should see beautiful little sprouts.

Now you have germinated seeds, it is time for you to plant them. I’ll show you the best way to do it in the next video.

A Beginner’s Guide with Kyle Kushman. EP 8: Feeding & Watering

Blog article: https://homegrowncannabisco.com/grow-your-own-with-kyle-kushman/how-to-grow-marijuana/abg-kyle-kushman-feeding-watering/

Welcome to grow your own with Kyle Kushman!

For Episode 8, I’m going to talk about different growing mediums, nutrients, water, how much to feed, when to water, and how to be responsive to your plant.

Growing Medium

You can choose from soil, Sphagnum, coco, Rockwool, or pea gravel. For soil, use something inert like Pro-Mix or a super soil like Vegamatrix. If you’re using my Veganic Super Soil (VSS), you’ll still need to add nutes, but only at 50% of the recommended dose on the food chart. Whatever you choose, follow the feeding schedule provided by the nutrient manufacturer you’re using.

Watering

I found the best way to water your plants is to cycle wet to dry. It involves watering to complete saturation, then allowing the plot to almost completely dry before watering again. Cycling keeps roots constantly searching and growing. Each time the moisture recedes, the root system will improve, creating a prolific root system and a solid root ball.

pH Level

Adding nutrients affects the pH of the soil, which, in turn, impacts how well your plants absorb nutrients, so check your inputs and runoff regularly. The optimal pH for soil gardening is around 6.5, so make sure your inputs are between 6.2 to 6.7. For hydroponics, optimal pH is around 6.2 and, for coco, it’s closer to 5.8.

Parts Per Million (PPM)

Another thing to monitor is PPM or Parts per Million — the level of solids in a solution – by checking your input levels and the runoff. Do this by running extra water for the feed and measuring the excess that runs out of the pot. If the PPMs are too high, alternate in a few plain waterings. If it’s too low, simply move up a notch on the feeding chart.

In conclusion, watering and the application of nutrients is of supreme importance. Try not to overdo anything as too much water or nutes can stress them out. The best thing you can do for your plants is to check on them regularly and provide their needs.

In Episode 9, we’ll look at transplanting, when and how to do it. See you soon!

A Beginner's Guide with Kyle Kushman. EP 5: Choosing Your Seeds

Welcome to Grow Your Own with Kyle Kushman!

Growing cannabis from seed is a great experience that is quite different from growing from clones. Plus, this route offers a broad range of varieties, diversity, better availability and accessibility, and, most importantly, stronger plants free from genetic degeneration.

When choosing the perfect seed for you, the two most critical factors to consider are the seed type and the strain.

SEED TYPE:

*Regular seeds have roughly a 50/50 chance of becoming a male or a female, and you need both when breeding.

*Feminized seeds grow beautiful, smokable flowers full of cannabinoids. They also eliminate the gender guessing game and the discarding of males.

*Autoflower seeds are perfect for novices and those who are too busy to take care of photoperiods. Despite their smaller yields, they remain small, grow year-round, and typically have a life cycle of under 3 months.

STRAIN:

Apart from the seed type, you must also choose which strain to grow.

*Pure Sativa or Sativa-dominant plants are tall, thin plants with long flowering time, which generally translate to higher yields.

*Pure Indica or Indica-dominant plants are easier to grow because they evolved in harsh climates. They mature faster with short, compact bud clusters.

*Hybrids make up most of cannabis cultivars, comprising different combinations of Indica, Sativa, and autos. Generalizing the growth pattern is tricky, so always refer to the details from the breeder or seller.

Once you already have your seeds. How do you know they’ll sprout? Good seeds are usually dark brown, hard with stripes.

In Episode 6, I’ll show the easiest way to germinate your seeds – the first step to growing strong, healthy plants.

See you soon, homegrowers!
