President Trump said Monday he is considering downgrading marijuana from a Schedule 1 drug, the most dangerous kind, alongside heroin and LSD, to a Schedule 3 drug, and would make his decision “over the next few weeks.”

Reducing marijuana from a Schedule 1 to a Schedule 3 drug means cannabis businesses will enjoy a reduced tax burden and greater access to banking. It would also expand research opportunities into marijuana’s medicinal potential.

The president said, “That determination hopefully will be the right one. It’s a very complicated subject.”

Right now, at the federal level, marijuana is classified as a schedule one drug, the same classification as heroin and LSD. CBD, or cannabidiol, is said to help alleviate pain and certain disorders. It has exploded in popularity since President Trump legalized the cultivation of hemp, but is CBD a medical miracle or just another fad?

Is America on the verge of going CBD-crazy? There’s some evidence that we’re headed that way.

Cannabidiol, or CBD – an active but not psychoactive compound found in marijuana (that is, it won’t get you high) – has been credited with near-magical powers. Its proponents claim that it can combat everything from acne to depression to Parkinson’s disease.

While scientists say that it has indeed proven useful for treating childhood epilepsy and may be useful for curing insomnia, anxiety, and some chronic pain, many of its other supposed benefits have yet to be proven. That hasn’t stopped a lot of Americans from giving it a try.

Former President Donald Trump said he expected a ballot measure in Florida to legalize marijuana to pass in a new TruthSocial post, but called on the state legislature to create laws to prevent the use of the drug in public.

Trump framed his position as one consistent with his “Make America Safe Again” agenda, writing that criminalizing marijuana would “waste Taxpayer Dollars arresting adults with personal amounts of it on them.”

Recreational cannabis is legal in 10 states and decriminalized in another 14. Virtually all presidential candidates, including Trump, favor letting states decide the legal status of marijuana. For the first time, polls show a majority of Republicans support legalization. And six proposals to move marijuana laws in a more or less libertarian direction are now making their way through Congress.

What do these policy proposals look like? How are states navigating the conflicts between state and federal law? And are there any obstacles left on the path to nationwide legalization?

Reason’s Todd Krainin sat down with Erik Altieri, the executive director of NORML, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, to talk about the building momentum towards nationwide legal pot.

“Voters in Oklahoma on Tuesday elected to legalize medical marijuana, which makes the state the 30th to allow the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes.

Oklahoma State Question 788 allows individuals 18 and older to obtain a medical marijuana license with a board-certified physician’s signature. Minors can get a license but will require the approval of two physicians and their parent or legal guardian. A new office in the Oklahoma State Department of Health will enforce regulations, including licensing for dispensaries, growers, and processors.

The measure is also relatively unique in that it doesn’t tie medical marijuana to any specific qualifying conditions, which will likely make it easier, compared to other states, to obtain pot for medicinal uses.

With 92 percent of precincts reporting, 56 percent of voters supported medical marijuana, while 43 percent opposed it.”*
