While weed laws are becoming more progressive in many states across the US, cannabis cultivation can still get you some serious prison time in the UK.

Most smokers have no idea where their buds come from, but the higher demand and continued criminalisation of weed in the UK has engendered a black-market supply chain of human deprivation: ‘Cannabis slaves’, often trafficked from Vietnam, are forced to tend to massive grows worth millions in street value – completely against their will.

For spliff connoisseurs who have been smoking their whole adult lives and hold down regular jobs and have families, picking up poor-quality hydroponic weed from dodgy dealers in blacked out cars or down dark alleyways has become less and less desirable. Guerrilla growers are an online community of cannabis cultivators in the UK who harvest their weed plants in the wild, hiding in plain sight sometimes on the side of motorways.

Growing certain strains of cannabis that can withstand the British climate, many have been supplying themselves and their friends with hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of organic weed for almost a decade. It’s all grown outside in the sun, bypassing dealers and without being traced by the police.

Our drugs editor, Max Daly, linked us up with two guerrilla growers who were about to retire from the cultivation game, just as they were harvesting their last ever crop.

Monday, April 20, was supposed to be the most epic 4/20 of our lifetime: the once-in-a-century date on which 4/20 can refer to either the day of the month or the year. But the spread of Covid-19, which has grown to more than 2.1 million cases and 140,000 deaths, 4/20/20 will be a more subdued day than I anticipated.

The 4/20/20 get-together I envisioned, where clouds of cannabis smoke float gently across Hippy Hill in the Bay Area—where I live—is no longer possible. San Francisco Mayor London Breed even sent out a warning on Twitter to whomever was planning to venture out during the shelter-in-place order: If you’re caught celebrating outdoors with others, you will be arrested. That means this holy day for all cannasseurs will have to spent in the comfort of your home—and there are definitely worse things.

When life give you lemons, make some lemonade—or in this case, cannabis-infused butter (aka cannabutter) to bake some delicious canna-treats.

On VICE’s weed travel show ‘BLUNT REVIEWS,’ we trek to places where weed is legal to review things a cannabis-consuming tourist can do while they’re stoned.

On this episode, VICE’s Trey Smith visited Alaska, where he stayed at Cecelia’s B&B, a weed-friendly bed and breakfast in Anchorage, and sampled a THC-infused buffet with folks from the local weed industry. Then he stopped by The High Expedition in Talkeetna, a dispensary that doubles as a museum to famous mountain climber Ray Genet, sampling their product before taking a bush plane to check out the surrounding mountain scenery.
