President Donald Trump’s acting attorney general on Thursday signed an order reclassifying state-licensed medical marijuana as a less-dangerous drug, a major policy shift long sought by advocates who said cannabis should never have been treated like heroin by the federal government.

The order signed by Todd Blanche does not legalize marijuana for medical or recreational use under U.S. law. But it does change the way it’s regulated, shifting licensed medical marijuana from Schedule I — reserved for drugs without medical use and with high potential for abuse — to the less strictly regulated Schedule III. It also gives licensed medical marijuana operators a major tax break and eases some barriers to researching cannabis.

The Trump administration also said it was jump-starting the process for reclassifying marijuana more broadly, setting a hearing to begin in late June.

Trump told his administration in December to work as quickly as possible to reclassify marijuana. On Saturday, as the Republican president signed an unrelated executive order about psychedelics, he seemed to express frustration that it was taking so long.

Blanche said Thursday that the Department of Justice was “delivering on President Trump’s promise” to expand Americans’ access to medical treatment options. “This rescheduling action allows for research on the safety and efficacy of this substance, ultimately providing patients with better care and doctors with more reliable information,” he said in a statement.

Blanche’s action Iargely legitimizes medical marijuana programs in the 40 states that have adopted them. It sets up an expedited system for state-licensed medical marijuana producers and distributors to register with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

In our latest TDR Cannabis in Five presented by Flowhub, host Shadd Dales breaks down a new NuggMD poll asking whether Americans believe the Trump administration will complete federal cannabis rescheduling before the end of the year.

At first glance, the poll looks pretty straightforward. Fifty-two percent of respondents don’t think rescheduling gets done this year, while 48% believe it will. But as Shadd points out, the bigger takeaway isn’t necessarily the split itself—it’s what those numbers say about how the public views the federal process.

The reality is most Americans understand legalization, but far fewer understand rescheduling. Between the DEA, HHS, FDA, DOJ, the Administrative Law Judge hearing and the federal rulemaking process, it’s a complicated system that most people simply don’t follow.

That’s what makes this poll interesting.

Shadd explains why the results appear to reflect uncertainty around the process—not necessarily opposition to cannabis reform. He also looks at what national polling continues to show about legalization support across the country and why public sentiment remains one of the strongest tailwinds for the industry, regardless of how long the administrative process ultimately takes.

It’s a timely conversation as the ALJ hearing continues and investors look ahead to the next phase of federal cannabis reform.

Democrats in Virginia just rushed through a budget to avoid a government shutdown — and accidentally legalized marijuana statewide for the next year.

A major drafting error means old criminal codes for distribution, sales to minors, and more were repealed effective July 1, 2026, while the new regulatory framework doesn’t kick in until July 1, 2027. The result? A wide-open window with no enforcement in place.

Delegate Tim Anderson and former Attorney General Jason Meares are sounding the alarm on this sloppy process. Prosecutors across Virginia, including Williamsburg Commonwealth’s Attorney Nate Green, warn that laws protecting kids under 21 and banning distribution may be unenforceable. Courts are likely to side against prosecutors in any ambiguity.

Governor Abigail Spanberger vetoed standalone marijuana legislation earlier, but it was stuffed into the budget via backroom deals after months of inaction on the actual budget. Instead of normal debate and hearings, Virginians get chaos: potential unregulated shops, risks to children, and uncertainty for law enforcement already stretched thin on other issues.

This highlights the dangers of ramming complex policy through budget bills under deadline pressure rather than through transparent legislative process. Virginia families deserve competent governance that protects kids and follows the rule of law.

In our latest TDR Cannabis in Five presented by Flowhub, host Shadd Dales breaks down one of the biggest takeaways from this week’s DEA Administrative Law Judge hearing: the federal conversation around cannabis is becoming much more focused on medicine.

For the first time during the hearing, the FDA publicly acknowledged under oath that cannabis has accepted medical uses while also comparing its safety profile to alcohol and opioids. The testimony offered new insight into how federal health officials are evaluating cannabis as the rescheduling process continues.

Shadd also explains why this matters beyond Schedule III. As regulators, healthcare providers and policymakers continue discussing where cannabinoids fit into modern medicine, attention is increasingly shifting toward pharmaceutical-grade products, standardized dosing, physician oversight and value-based care.

The episode also looks at how companies working in the cannabinoid medicine space could fit into that changing healthcare landscape, why consistency and clinical data matter, and what some of the early lessons from cannabinoid pilot programs may tell us moving forward.

As the ALJ hearing continues, one theme is becoming increasingly clear: the conversation is no longer centered solely on legalization. It’s increasingly becoming about where cannabinoids fit inside the U.S. healthcare system, and how that transition could change the next phase of the industry.
