Daily Cannabis Use Passes Alcohol, Cigarettes | TDR Cannabis in 5

21.4 million Americans now use marijuana daily or near-daily, more than the number who drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes every day.

In this episode of TDR Cannabis in 5, host Shadd Dales breaks down a new federal report showing cannabis has officially become the most commonly used daily drug in the country, a story first reported by Marijuana Moment.

The numbers come from the 2025 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Cannabis now beats 17.2 million daily alcohol users and 19.9 million daily cigarette smokers, along with nicotine vaping, cigar smoking, and smokeless tobacco.

This is happening while cannabis remains federally prohibited under the Controlled Substances Act, even with medical marijuana sitting in Schedule III.

Shadd also points out that teen marijuana use keeps declining even as more states legalize for adults, which undercuts one of the most repeated arguments against reform.

The episode covers the longer trend too, daily cannabis use is up nearly 15-fold since 1992, and other research shows young adults are three times more likely to use marijuana daily than alcohol.

We get m into what’s likely driving this, culture normalization, and cannabis becoming a common substitute for alcohol, plus what it could mean for regulators, public health messaging, and companies focused on daily-use products like gummies and beverages heading into 2027.

Prison U: College Degrees While Serving Time?! Crazy Stories!

Don’t forget to like/follow/subscribe to the page!

Behind bars, the notorious drug kingpin—infamous for building a weed empire through daring smuggling stories during the era of the cocaine cowboys—found himself immersed in an unexpected world of education. Marijuana smuggling, cannabis culture, and the high-stakes life of marijuana trafficking seemed a far cry from the lecture halls of “Prison U,” yet here, Perlowin and fellow inmates, many with pasts shaped by cannabis addiction, weed money, and the evolving cannabis industry, seized the chance to transform their lives. The cold, institutional walls that once echoed with tales of cannabis smuggling and drug dealing now buzzed with discussions about marijuana laws, medical marijuana, and even cannabis legalization, as these students worked toward a future beyond their criminal pasts.

Professor Decker, a firm believer in second chances and the potential within every individual, led courses that bridged the gap between the counterculture roots of the cannabis movement and modern perspectives on recreational cannabis and the growing legal weed market. As stories of vintage smuggling and true crime faded into the background, inmates like Perlowin—dubbed the “King of Pot”—embraced the opportunity to earn college degrees and rewrite their narratives. This unique blend of true crime, cannabis history, and redemption underscored the evolving face of the cannabis industry, spotlighting figures like Todd Denkin and organizations such as TNMNews that continue to shape the conversation around marijuana and social change.

We wanted to write a fun, light-hearted song about my views on the severely out-dated laws of marijuana smoking and possession. We’ve never been big in political themes and this just our contribution to the hopeful reform. Our approach is always positive, even with darker material. If nothing else, I think we are saying what a lot of people are thinking and a couple states have jumped on board already. Lets keep it going! -Howi
