A major move just happened in Washington—and it could confirm that cannabis rescheduling is closer than ever.

Congressional lawmakers have officially approved a GOP-backed spending bill that would block the Department of Justice from using funds to reschedule or deschedule marijuana under the Controlled Substances Act.

On the surface, this looks like a setback. But here’s why it’s actually huge news:

House Republicans wouldn’t be pushing this rider unless they believed an announcement on cannabis rescheduling was imminent.

And just last week, President Donald Trump, in a private meeting with two House lawmakers, said:
“We’ll be moving forward soon with rescheduling marijuana.”

That’s Trump’s first public or private acknowledgment on cannabis reform this year—and it adds political momentum as the Senate prepares to confirm Terrence Cole as the new DEA Administrator. Cole has already said rescheduling marijuana would be one of his top priorities.

If marijuana moves to Schedule III, it would:
• Legalize prescription use of FDA-approved cannabis medicines nationwide
• Provide medical cannabis businesses federal tax relief by eliminating 280E restrictions
• Offer patients and state-compliant operators new legal protections

So the big question is—will the DEA act before Congress can tie its hands with this funding ban, or will this turn into a full-on political showdown ahead of the 2026 elections?

There are few business sectors that have collapsed as dramatically as cannabis. Once projected to generate billions in new business, radical social reform, job creation, and rapid growth, the industry has devolved into a commoditized race to the bottom. But these days, with competition everywhere, profits have collapsed and no one has been able to figure out how to compete at scale on anything besides price. From one angle, this was just a case of too much supply for too little demand. From another angle, commoditization was always inevitable. But market correction shouldn’t mean collapse. What’s left today is just business – regulated, fragmented, ruthless, and perfectly competitive where only the smartest survive.

Every industry has its gold rush. For cannabis, the “Green Rush” started in 2012 when Colorado and Washington became the first U.S. states to legalize recreational marijuana. As more states and countries joined in after 2012, every link in the value chain—from farming to retail—was up for grabs. Startups burned through millions in venture capital, building fast and talking big. When Canada legalized marijuana in 2018, it gave these same companies the means to pump-and-dump weed stocks. But just because the corporations are losing money, doesn’t mean everyone else is.

While they’re hemorrhaging cash, local, self-funded dispensaries are quietly surviving. For them, profit isn’t a future goal—it’s a mandate. California is the world’s largest and most competitive cannabis market. In 2023, $5.1 billion of legal cannabis was sold in the Golden State, with another $8 billion moving through the black market. Los Angeles County alone reigns as the highest-grossing market, with 5 to 10 times as many sales as any other county in the state.

Your Guide to Successfully Watering your Cannabis Plants

If only watering your cannabis plants was as easy as giving them some water once a week.
Unfortunately, it isn’t, so get the watering element of your plant care wrong, and very quickly you’ll have dead or dying plants.

It might surprise you to learn that it is easier to overwater your cannabis plants than underwater them.

However, before you start thinking that watering is seriously complicated, it isn’t, you just need to follow a few basic rules.

First off there is pot size. For your seedlings, you want a small pot with a light and airy growing medium. You want to be able to get the growing medium nice and moist, but still well drained so that it will dry out.

If you put seedlings in a large pot, invariably the soil will never dry out to any extent, and the roots will begin to rot.

Once transferred to a large pot, you want to make sure that the soil, or growing medium, drains easily. The idea is for the soil to be moist, not soaking wet.

The pot should have holes in the bottom so that excess water can drain off, and the pot should be slightly raised so that it doesn’t stand in any excess water.

If your soil remains too wet, it will encourage the growth of mould and bacteria on the surface.
In a good set-up, the surface of the soil should dry out between watering – this stops mould and bacteria forming.

When you water the soil, it should take roughly two or three minutes for excess water to drain through. If it takes a lot longer, then the soil is too heavy and will remain too wet and compacted around the root system.

Adding perlite to soil is a good way to encourage healthy drainage.

While you can’t tell how wet the soil is at a depth of greater than six centimetres, sticking your finger in the soil is a good way to check if the plant needs watering. If it is dry all the way down, chances are it needs watering.

If you can feel that the soil is damp, leave things alone.

Often a good way to tell if a plant needs watering is to lift the pot – if it feels appreciably lighter than it did when it has just been watered, it’s time for a top-up.

The only other thing to keep an eye on, is the pH of the soil, as too much water can change it from the optimum 6.3-6.8.

So remember, cannabis plants are not the same as goldfish, so they don’t need to be immersed in water 24/7!
