James Talarico (D) won the U.S. Senate seat, the first Democratic win in Texas since 1988, defeating Attorney General Ken Paxton. During the campaign, Talarico backed legalizing, regulating and taxing adult-use cannabis, and in an October interview he named it as an issue where he could work with Trump. The episode looks at what Trump has actually supported, medical marijuana reform and rescheduling, and why that’s different from nationwide recreational legalization.
Gina Hinojosa (D) defeated Governor Greg Abbott. She voted against Texas’s 2025 hemp-THC ban, has backed expanding the medical program and lower possession penalties, and supported a statewide referendum on legalization. Vikki Goodwin (D) defeated Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, a leading champion of the hemp-THC ban. Because the Lieutenant Governor helps decide which bills reach the Senate floor, her influence matters, though Republicans are expected to keep control of the chamber.
The episode closes on what a workable Texas market would need: state licensing, mandatory testing, accurate THC labeling, age limits and enforcement against illegal sellers.
