Marijuana Industry Insight – Episode 5: Cogeneration for a Cannabis Grow

In this Episode we discuss Cogeneration (CHP) and the efficiencies that can be gained for your cannabis grow operations.

Cogeneration through combined heat and power (CHP) is the simultaneous production of electricity with the recovery and utilisation of the heat produced.

Cogeneration is a highly efficient form of energy conversion and it can achieve primary energy savings of approximately 40% by compared to the separate purchase of electricity from the national electricity grid and a gas boiler for onsite heating. The waste heat from these systems can also be used to create free chilled water via an absorption chiller. These systems are truly ideal for cannabis cultivation because cannabis cultivation requires a massive and constant electricity load which requires a proportionate amount of cooling and heating to properly maintain environment.

Generally these systems are fueled using either natural gas or biofuels which produce large amounts of carbon dioxide as a byproduct of combustion. This CO2 is also extremely valuable to cultivators.

A 700kw CHP system can save a facility upwards of one million dollars in yearly operating costs.

Justin Trudeau speaks about pot pardon process as marijuana legalized in Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018 that the pardon process for people who received sentences for simple marijuana possession would be “simplified” and free.

He said legalization was needed because the previous prohibition wasn’t working and more young Canadians were using marijuana illegally.

He added when asked if he would use marijuana now that it’s legalized that he has no intention of doing so.

3 Pros and 3 Cons to Federal Marijuana Legalization

Marijuana legalization is spreading all across the United States, but the drug is still illegal at the federal level. Senator Cory Booker recently proposed a bill to legalize marijuana nationwide while also encouraging states to legalize locally through incentives. The states that have legalized marijuana have had positive experiences since regulating and taxing the drug, but legalizing cannabis at the federal level will certainly have its fair share of pros and cons for both producers and consumers.

First, the reason why Booker proposed this bill, is because federal legalization will reduce incarceration of minorities, “You see these marijuana arrests happening so much in our country, targeting certain communities — poor communities, minority communities — targeting people with an illness.” Under Booker’s bill, those aggravated by these disproportionate arrests could sue. With fewer marijuana arrests as a result of federal marijuana legalization, the nation would also waste less money on jails, so the government could use that money to help elsewhere. Many marijuana farmers fear federal legalization though, because it will reduce the quality of their flower as bigger corporations enter the market. This may be especially difficult for the local economies that rely on these marijuana farms, proving that federal legalization will both help and hinder many.
