A divided U.S. House committee approved a proposal Wednesday to decriminalize and tax marijuana at the federal level. The House Judiciary Committee approved the proposal 24-10 after more than two hours of debate. It would reverse a longstanding federal prohibition by removing marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act, while allowing states to set their own rules on pot.

Marijuana is far less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco. Around 50,000 people die each year from alcohol poisoning. Similarly, more than 400,000 deaths each year are attributed to tobacco smoking. By comparison, marijuana is nontoxic and cannot cause death by overdose. According to the prestigious European medical journal, The Lancet, “The smoking of cannabis, even long-term, is not harmful to health. … It would be reasonable to judge cannabis as less of a threat … than alcohol or tobacco.”

“AT A TOWN Hall meeting in New Hampshire last night, Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie had a message for recreational marijuana users: enjoy it while it lasts, kids.

“I believe it should still be illegal,” he said. “If you’re getting high in Colorado today, enjoy it until January 2017, because I will enforce the federal laws against marijuana as President of the United States.””*

Congress is taking steps to undo the District of Columbia’s widely supported referendum legalizing marijuana for recreational use. Buried within the “cromnibus” bill passed by the House last Thursday is a measure blocking the implementation of the new pot regulations, which was approved by nearly 70 percent of DC voters in November.
