Cannabis Legalization with R. Lorraine Collins

There are few people more qualified to weigh in on the legalization of cannabis than psychologist R. Lorraine Collins (https://publichealth.buffalo.edu/community-health-and-health-behavior/faculty-and-staff/faculty-directory/lcollins.html) , a renowned addictions expert who started researching the drug decades ago, long before the wave of legalization began sweeping the U.S. In this episode of Driven to Discover, David Hill talks to Collins, a SUNY Distinguished Professor at the University at Buffalo and director of the Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, about the pros and cons of legal cannabis, what New York State is getting right (and wrong) in its legalization journey, the historical racism behind cannabis being designated a Schedule I substance, and why it’s so critical for research that the federal government reclassify it.

Coming May 6: Earthworms enjoy a pretty good rep. In truth, they’re an invasive species in the Northeast, not always a friend to our gardens, and a real menace to our forests. But they can be beneficial too. In this episode, ecologist Nick Henshue sheds light on the poorly understood creature, explaining how we can exploit its benefits while minimizing its potential for harm.

The health risks and policy problems of cannabis legalization | LIVE STREAM

In his recent book, “Tell Your Children: The Truth About Marijuana, Mental Illness, and Violence” (Simon and Schuster, 2019), Alex Berenson examines the potential health risks of cannabis use. Most pointedly, he argues that cannabis can cause increased levels of psychosis and violence and that evidence of such risks has been largely covered up or ignored.

Not all researchers and drug policy experts agree with Mr. Berenson, though. As the movement to legalize cannabis gains steam in the US, policymakers at every level must pay close attention to the open debate over the risks of cannabis usage.

Join AEI as Mr. Berenson presents his findings and an expert panel of physicians and drug policy experts weigh in on what challenges legalization might present for public policy and public health.

This Is What Marijuana Does to Your Brain

This Is What Marijuana Does to Your Brain
#shorts #Marijuana

The impact of marijuana on the brain is a complex issue, with some studies suggesting occasional use has minimal long-term effects. Frequent and heavy consumption, especially during adolescence, can alter brain development. THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana, affects the endocannabinoid system, which is crucial for memory, learning, and decision-making. Prolonged exposure may reduce gray matter in regions responsible for cognition and impulse control. Genetic factors and individual brain chemistry influence the extent of these effects. The debate continues as researchers work to separate myths from facts and emphasize responsible use and further scientific exploration.

Myths vs. Realities: Exploring the world of cannabis use

It’s been 5 years since cannabis was legalized for recreational use in Canada.

While it is legal, using cannabis is not without harm or risk.

James MacKillop is the director of the Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research at McMaster University, director of the Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and a professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences.

MacKillop says there are many myths about cannabis and cannabis use, one of the most common being cannabis is not addictive.

Among those who use cannabis, roughly one in 10 develop cannabis use disorder (CUD), says MacKillop. The rate doubles in people who start using early as teenagers and increases to as high as 50 per cent among those who use cannabis daily.

While there’s no amount of cannabis known to have a lethal effect, overconsumption can lead to negative consequences like delirium or psychosis.

MacKillop adds that an important nuance is most negative consequences happen to a subset of people who use cannabis heavily, frequently and products that are high in Delta 9 THC – the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

MacKillop says this video is not about being pro-cannabis or anti-cannabis but about empowering people to make good decisions based on the facts.

Why Kentucky gun owners struggle to access medical marijuana | Spectrum News

Kentucky is the 38th state to legalize medical cannabis, but gun owners wishing to use medical cannabis may face a challenge. Kentucky NORML Executive Director Matthew Bratcher said on the form to purchase a firearm, it asks if you are a medical cannabis user. If you lie on the form, Bratcher said you could be charged with a federal perjury and if convicted, face up to 10 years in jail.

The Science Behind Medical Marijuana

Marijuana or Cannabis, known to some as the stoner drug, is known for getting people“high.” It is legal in 8 states for recreational use, legal in 20 states for medical use, and illegal in 22 states.
Some consider it to be as dangerous as cocaine or heroin.
But did you know that marijuana also has many reported health benefits, many that have been backed by research?
But before we get into that – let’s start by looking at the makeup of marijuana itself.
Marijuana contains 2 key ingredients.
The main component is a psychoactive ingredient that is responsible for the “high” effects. It’s called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is a psychoactive chemical.
THC attaches to cannabinoid receptors in parts of the brain that include thinking, memory, sensory and time perception. This is how THC plays a part in psychological effects you may have while under the influence of cannabis.
THC has also been used for it’s pain-relieving effects.
A study published in the Journal of Pain & Palliative Care Pharmacotherapy suggested that THC activates pathways in the central nervous system which work to block pain signals from being sent to the brain.
A pilot study published in clinical drug investigation talks about how THC helps with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Because of its psychological effects on the brain, it has been therapeutic for some patients that have suffered from flashbacks, agitation and nightmares and other symptoms of PTSD
Another component of Marijuana is a non-psychoactive ingredient that is called cannabidiol (CBD). It reduces the effect that THC has, in other words it works against the “high effects”
CBD is thought to be responsible for turning off a gene by the name of ID-1, a protein coding gene that is suggested to help cancer cells spread throughout the body. Studies published in the journal Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, suggest that Cancerous cells make more copies of these genes than non-cancerous cells.
Some anecdotal cases show marijuana may also help in treating epilepsy – although this is yet to be comprehensively studied. But in the case of 8 year old Charlotte Figi, the use of marijuana that was low on THC but high on CBD had reduced her 300 seizures a week to just 1 seizure every 7 days.
So marijuana has other applications – other than just producing the ‘high effect’.

Why Cannabis Medicine Is Unlike Anything Else: Truths, Myths & Empowered Patients | Dr Caplan

Welcome to The CED Clinic Channel! In this video, we share an important aspect of cannabis medicine, one that challenges traditional medical perspectives and centers the patient experience. With Dr. Benjamin Caplan, MD, a leader in clinical cannabis care, we explore the critical role of skepticism, patient empowerment, and the ongoing struggle to find reliable information in a field full of mixed messages.

Episode Highlights:
Cannabis medicine can be a misinformation minefield, with both positive and negative claims often riddled with inaccuracies. In this discussion, Dr. Caplan candidly addresses:
• The Need for Skepticism — Why being a “skeptical scientist” is essential in an industry flooded with myths
• Empowering Patients — How cannabis uniquely gives patients a sense of choice and control over their care
• Seeing Beyond Traditional Care — Shifting focus from doctor-driven prescriptions to patient-centered healing
• Debunking Myths — Which cannabis “facts” might be misleading, and how to find real answers

Dr. Caplan’s approach embraces patients as active participants in their treatment, offering them autonomy rarely found in conventional medicine. Cannabis, he explains, allows individuals to be deeply involved in managing their health—choosing the form, timing, and effects that best fit their needs.

As we unpack these themes, we’ll also highlight the broader implications for clinical care, covering issues like dosing for individualized effects, navigating an emerging and evolving cannabis industry, and insights from Dr. Caplan’s own experience at the forefront of cannabis medicine at CEDclinic.com and through The Doctor-Approved Cannabis Handbook, available at Amazon.com.

A true wine connoisseur will take special precautions when it comes to storing their wine, so why should a weed specialist be any different when it comes to preserving their nugs?

Gone are the days of hiding weed in sandwich baggies or in shoeboxes under the bed. Cannabis deserves better than that, and so do you. Storing pot in the right conditions will help it keep its taste longer, and protect it from the elements that will deteriorate its quality (like heat). And we’re not talking about keeping your marijuana good for just an extra week or two—with some of these methods, your nugs can remain fresh for years after you purchased it. But the best thing about it? You can purchase many of these storage systems without breaking the bank, and once you have everything together, you’ll have the extra benefit of having your collection organized, just like those fancy winos out there.

So check out our in-depth look at storage options above, and get your weed the protection it needs.

Recreational Use: Cannabis Use on The Rise For Recreational Use Amongst Americans #cannabisdaily

Recreational Cannabis Usage in the United States: A Growing Trend

Cannabis is more popular than ever in the United States, especially as states continue to legalize its recreational use. What was once a prohibited plant has now become a booming industry, reflecting shifting attitudes toward cannabis consumption. Despite this momentum, the journey to full acceptance is far from over. The ongoing debate around legalization, regulation, and public perception presents both opportunities and challenges for the industry.

At High Science, we’re not just watching this trend—we’re actively participating in the movement. By focusing on cannabis education and promoting its responsible use, we aim to be a key player in shaping a more open and informed society. Our mission is to advance cannabis culture while pushing for federal legalization, breaking down barriers that have long held the industry and its consumers back.

The Current State of Recreational Cannabis in the U.S.
As of now, 23 states and Washington, D.C. have legalized the recreational use of cannabis, allowing adults 21 and older to purchase and consume it. States like California, Colorado, and Oregon were early adopters, leading the way for others like New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. These legal frameworks have brought cannabis into the mainstream, opening up new economic opportunities while also challenging longstanding stigmas.

However, the pace of legalization has varied widely. Some states remain firmly against recreational use, reflecting regional differences in public opinion, political leanings, and regulatory approaches. States that have embraced cannabis legalization often impose strict regulations on where and how it can be sold, consumed, and advertised, making it essential for businesses to operate within a complicated patchwork of rules.

Economic Benefits of Legalization
One of the strongest arguments for the legalization of recreational cannabis is the economic boost it provides. In states where cannabis is legal, the industry has generated billions of dollars in revenue. This influx comes from a combination of direct sales, taxes, and the creation of jobs—ranging from cultivation and production to retail and ancillary services. Legalization also helps diminish the illegal market, offering a safer, regulated alternative for consumers.

At High Science, we recognize the significant economic impact the cannabis industry can have on local communities and states. As a lifestyle brand focused on cannabis advancements, we advocate for policies that create a fair marketplace, one that supports both large and small businesses while fostering innovation and growth. The economic power of cannabis is undeniable, and we believe responsible legalization can fuel both the industry and the broader economy.

Social and Cultural Shifts
The rise of recreational cannabis use has not only influenced economics but also reshaped societal norms. Cannabis is no longer just a counterculture symbol—it’s becoming a regular part of everyday life for millions of Americans. The growing acceptance of recreational use reflects a shift in how people view cannabis, not just as a substance for relaxation, but also for wellness and social experiences.

This change, however, is not without controversy. Many still harbor concerns about the long-term health effects of recreational use, the potential for increased consumption among minors, and the risk of impaired driving. These concerns highlight the need for clear regulations and responsible consumption guidelines. At High Science, we promote an open dialogue around these issues, emphasizing the importance of informed, safe use. Our educational initiatives focus on raising awareness of the potential benefits of cannabis while advocating for careful, responsible consumption.

Challenges to Nationwide Legalization
Despite the progress made in legalizing recreational cannabis at the state level, the substance remains illegal at the federal level. The federal government still classifies cannabis as a Schedule I drug, putting it in the same category as heroin and LSD. This classification limits research, creates banking challenges for cannabis businesses, and perpetuates stigma. Federal legalization would alleviate these challenges, allowing the industry to flourish under a unified legal framework.

At High Science, we’re pushing for broader legalization efforts by engaging with communities and policymakers to change perceptions and policies. We believe that as more states adopt recreational cannabis laws, momentum will build toward federal reform. Our mission is to ensure that the benefits of legalization—economic, social, and cultural—are fully realized, helping to create a future where cannabis is normalized and accessible to all adults who choose to consume it.

About this video lesson:
When a person is smoking cannabis, one of the plant’s chemicals known as THC, passes from the lungs into the bloodstream and then to the brain. If that brain is exposed to a lot of THC, but still immature, the part responsible for controlling emotions may never reach its full potential. This can have long-term consequences and effects on one’s measurable intelligence, learning and judgment. But there are also other reasons why teens should not consume weed.

Can You Overdose On Weed?

Can you actually overdose on weed? Is the fact that nobody has overdosed on weed true? In today’s educational video, we will explore the side effects of marijuana.

A drug overdose occurs when a person takes more than the medically recommended dose, resulting in a toxic state which can sometimes lead to death. It can be accidental or intentional where an individual wants to end their life. How much of a drug causes an overdose can differ from person to person and their own physiology. So what about marijuana? There’s been a lot of news about the medical benefits of this drug in recent months and in many countries it has been legalized for medical purposes. But is there a dangerous side to it? That’s what we intend to find out, in this episode of The Infographics Show: Can you overdose on weed?

Is Marijuana Actually Medicinal?

Does marijuana actually have any health benefits or are potheads blowing smoke trying to justify their high? Host Myles Bess clears the smoke on medical marijuana research and gets into the weeds discussing some of the high hurdles researchers face when trying to study marijuana.

SUBSCRIBE to Above the Noise: https://www.youtube.com/abovethenoise?sub_confirmation=1

ABOVE THE NOISE is a show that cuts through the hype and takes a deeper look at the science behind controversial and trending topics in the news. Hosted by Myles Bess and Shirin Ghaffary.

*NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEDNESDAY*

With the results of the 2016 election, use of medical marijuana is now approved in 28 states, plus Washington, D.C., but the plant itself is not approved as medicine by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It still remains federally illegal. Under the Controlled Substances Act, the federal government classifies marijuana as a schedule I drug– which is a category reserved for the most dangerous drugs, drugs that do not show any medical benefit. This classification makes it difficult for researchers to study, because drugs in this category are very tightly regulated.

So we wanted to know, what does the science say?

— Are there actually any medical benefits to marijuana?
There’s emerging research indicating that marijuana does have some medical benefits, particularly when it comes to chronic pain management and multiple sclerosis.

— Is marijuana approved by the FDA?
The plant itself is not approved, but the FDA has approved two pills containing THC, a compound found in marijuana. These pills are used to treat nausea from chemotherapy and symptoms associated with AIDS.

— What makes marijuana medicinal?
Marijuana contains a bunch of compounds called cannabinoids. These compounds affect the endocannabinoid system in the body and impact things like pain perception, motor movement, memory and cognition.

Program Overview
Cannabis, or marijuana, has been used for medicinal purposes since 2737 BC. Despite the federal government endorsing the illegal status of this drug, patients have continued to obtain cannabis for medical purposes. Currently, eighteen states and the District of Columbia in the U.S. have laws that allow marijuana to be used for medicinal reasons (e.g., severe pain, muscle spasms, severe nausea). It is important for pharmacists to understand the characteristics and appropriate use of medical marijuana with more patients seeking this alternative therapy. This webinar will use an evidence-based approach to discuss the pharmacology, therapeutic uses, side effects, psychiatric implications, drug interactions, and various dosage forms of medical marijuana. Pharmacists need to know and be able to talk with patients about the risks and benefits of using medical marijuana.

Pharmacist Educational Objectives
– Review various dosage formulations of medical marijuana (MMJ) available to patients

-Describe the clinical pharmacology of botanical MMJ and its active components

-Evaluate and discuss clinical studies performed in patients with various conditions to determine the effectiveness of botanical MMJ

-Identify adverse effects, psychiatric implications, and potential drug interactions that may occur with the use of botanical MMJ

Is marijuana bad for your brain? – Anees Bahji

Explore how marijuana’s two main active compounds, THC and CBD, affect your brain and body, and what risk factors to watch out for.

In 1970, marijuana was classified as a schedule 1 drug in the United States: the strictest designation possible, meaning it was completely illegal and had no recognized medical uses. Today, marijuana’s therapeutic benefits are widely acknowledged, but a growing recognition for its medical value doesn’t answer the question: is recreational marijuana use bad for your brain? Anees Bahji investigates.
