New South Wales is introducing controversial legislation allowing medicinal cannabis users with valid prescriptions to drive, implementing a three-strike system with 24-hour bans for positive THC tests and penalties after repeated offences. The proposed law change has divided the community, with supporters including army veterans and rugby league great Andrew Johns arguing it will end unfair criminalisation of legal patients, while opponents including road safety advocates and the Opposition warn it could endanger lives due to unclear impairment levels. Approximately one million Australians use medicinal cannabis, with up to a third residing in New South Wales where monthly dispensing has doubled in the past year.
