Welcome back to the Growers Choice Get Growing Video Series! Today, we’re talking about auto-flowering seeds. These special little guys can make your gardening experience a whole lot less stressful, and Growers Choice has six fantastic auto-flowering strains to choose from.

Let’s jump right in.

Auto-flowering seeds are great because there’s one less step you need to worry about during the life cycle. Thanks to cross-breeding with a unique type of cannabis, auto-flowering seeds “automatically” switch from the vegetative to the flowering stage when they’re ready to start producing flowers.

If you’ve grown regular cannabis seeds before, or if you’ve done your research, you’ll know cannabis plants will not begin to flower as long as they are getting more sunlight each day than darkness. If you’re using a grow room, you’ve been told to keep your lights on between 18 and 24 hours a day for the first few weeks (or even months) of the plant’s life cycle.

This non-flowering stage is important, because your plant needs to direct all its resources to getting big and strong before it starts making flowers. Otherwise, the stalk and branches won’t be able to support the weight of the buds.

With auto-flowering seeds, you don’t need to worry about picking the right time, or changing the lighting. After two or three weeks in the vegetative stage, they’ll start to flower on their own.

So, what about light?

When growing auto-flowering strains, most gardeners leave the lighting at 18 or 24 hours for the entire life cycle of their plants. This might seem like a lot of energy, but another cool thing about auto-flowering strains is that they’re ready for harvest just 7 to 13 weeks after germination. To compare, regular cannabis plants take between 3 and 4 months from seed to harvest.

How do they manage this magical transformation?

Auto-flowering seeds are capable of this amazing feat because they have been cross-bred with Cannabis Ruderalis. Another type in addition to indica and sativa, Ruderalis cannabis comes from Russia, where the weather is cooler and the summers are shorter. Because of this different growing season, the plants evolved to complete their life cycle more quickly – in order to beat the early winter frost.

Combining indicas and sativas with ruderalis doesn’t change the THC or CBD content of the strains, nor does it change flavor or resin production. What it does do is make the plants smaller. Because ruderalis plants are rarely more than two feet tall, a sativa-ruderalis hybrid will not reach the 6 feet a pure sativa could. Rather it might max out at about 4 feet. Indica hybrids will be a bit shorter.
