In recent years, with the legalization of medical marijuana in a number of states, the interest in developing and researching marijuana for medical purposes has increased. However, challenges persist for the physicians who are trying to do so. Federal laws tightly regulate marijuana’s use and make it difficult for studies to be conducted and for trials to be planned, and the diversity in marijuana laws has created a non-standardized situation for those who practice within states where its use is legal.

Jessica Robinson-Papp, MD, MS, professor of neurology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, is one of the physicians with an interest in medical marijuana and its potential uses. At the 2019 American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she gave a presentation to help inform those who were interested about the laws, the current evidence for its efficacy, and the obstacles which complicate the situation.

In an exchange with NeurologyLive, Robinson-Papp spoke about what’s currently known about its use across a spectrum of conditions like epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and multiple sclerosis; how cannabidiol (CBD) fits into the conversation; and what still needs to be done to have a real understanding of marijuana’s place in medicine.

Authorities seized more than 400 pounds of illegal marijuana during a raid in a Northern California grow house. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office discovered more than 1,400 marijuana plants in the West Point grow house, about 70 miles southeast of Sacramento, on Thursday, according to a statement.

Flushing marijuana plants prior to harvest is said to remove the salts and nutrients from the flowers and produce a smoother burning end product. This should be done in conjunction with a harvest BEFORE sunrise (or start of light cycle) for the same reason, to reduce nutrients in the flower at harvest time. Leaves may yellow after flushing and comments are appreciated on your experiences. This is a Jack Herer / Lemon Kush hydrid that was pollinated by a hermied Krumb Cake. All 18 seeds sprouted and were male, 8 have been harvested thus far using outdoor winter flowering in southern CA. These were planted on 9/19/2019. Flower cycle began December 8th with an extended day of darkness.

In the last Federal election (2015), Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada vowed to legalize recreational cannabis. This promise is soon to become reality as the Canadian government has proposed to move forward with legalization to July 2018. Along with a change in legislature comes sizeable public opposition from people who are afraid that legalizing cannabis will carry unintended consequences. This video demystifies unfounded conjecture surrounding the topic of cannabis legalization. It uses peer-reviewed evidence from jurisdictions that have either already legalized recreational cannabis use or have evaluated the use of cannabis and its associated outcomes. The video informs about the impacts, both positive and negative, of cannabis use in Canada’s new age of drug legalization.

Should Tennessee legalize recreational marijuana? In years past, legislators have attempted to legalize the use of medical marijuana, in hopes that it could help curb opioid addiction. None of those efforts have been successful. Recreational is a different story. There are currently 11 other states in the US that have legalized recreational use of marijuana, and one Tennessee Senator would like our state to become the next. By legalizing this, State Senator Raumesh Akbari feels this could reduce penalities for low level possessions, and provide the state with new revenue from taxing sales of the product. Medical Cannabis is legal in 33 states now despite having a 94% national support rating. Medical marijuana has helped thousands with cancer, Parkinsons, epilepsy, chronic pain, neurological disorders and so many other illnesses to be able to obtain a quality of life that was not reachable through “traditional, mainstream” treatment. Medical cannabis is also known to help people with depression, anxiety, mood disorders, lack of sleep. We decided to take my mom who has Parkinson’s Disease to see a cannabis doctor, Dr. Junella Chin, and see if CBD oil could provide some comfort for her. We documented the appointment so you can learn some of the benefits of CBD oil as it is used to treat Parkinsons patients. Check it out!
