Water quality is critical when it comes to creating all life including plants, but people generally use tap water for growing and then add loads of different products to the water in order to feed their plants without checking the quality of their water. Then they’re surprised with their mediocre results. Using the wrong kind of water makes your plants much more susceptible to illnesses and attracting insects and fungi infestations, which can lead to poor quality flowers once harvested.
In order to get great quality flowers and to make the most out of the nutrients used, the most important thing is to make sure that you know your water, which means knowing what’s in the water. Secondly, you’ll need to work within specific pH and EC levels so that your plants can absorb everything they need to flourish. Keep in mind that these levels vary depending on the phase your plants are in and the strain grown. This is why you absolutely need pH and EC meters to test your water, when growing cannabis, although this video is more about different types of water and how and if they can be used.
Potential problem areas with the water you use are Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, sodium, boron, silica, Chlorides and Chloramines. Keep that in mind when selecting your water source. The goal is to use water that has a pH of 6.5 or less and TDS that is under 200 ppm. PH tells you how acidic the water is or isn’t and Electro Conductivity or EC or TDS tells you the total dissolved solids content of your water. You need to test your water with a pH tester and EC or TDS meter to make sure you know what you’re starting out with. Generally, you will need to start with water that has a very low EC, the lower the better.
Always keep in mind that water is a natural solvent and absorbs whatever minerals it comes into contact with. So if the soil in your area has a lot of minerals so will your water, minerals that are not particularly good for growing which will raise the EC.
