Marijuana has a long history as a psychoactive drug in pop culture, as a political issue in the fight for legalization, and as one of the oldest crops grown. Before marijuana was even consumed for its psychoactive powers, farmers cultivated the ‘hemp’ version of the plant for industrial purposes. Hemp fibers were valuable at the time because they served as a strong material in many aspects of people’s day to day lives. Now that marijuana is becoming legalized both recreationally and medically, more companies, farmers, and individuals are growing cannabis simply because new laws say they can. Many people and even some growers don’t know a lot about cultivating marijuana because it is certainly a unique and interesting plant to produce.

First, although plants are grown by starting with a seed, many marijuana growers start the cultivation process with cannabis clones rather than the seeds themselves. Many people don’t know that marijuana plants have distinct sexes that each produce unique flowers. In order to avoid the tedious sorting process to determine the sexes of the seeds, farmers start growing marijuana as clones. At this point, the plant’s sex is already determined, so the grower can plan accordingly since both sexes produce different flowers and serve different purposes.
