President Donald Trump has signed an executive order reclassifying marijuana as a Schedule III controlled substance, marking a major shift in federal drug policy.
The move removes marijuana from the most restrictive category of drugs, formally recognizing its medical use and lower potential for abuse. While the order does not legalize marijuana nationwide, it could ease restrictions on medical research, expand patient access and reshape the cannabis industry.
Experts say rescheduling may also open the door to insurance coverage, banking access and tax deductions for marijuana businesses.
