Tennessee lawmakers from both parties are once again debating marijuana policies at the state capitol. The discussions follow a federal shift in how marijuana is classified—a move that could influence state-level reforms.

Lawmakers are revisiting marijuana legislation this session, with proposals that could allow for expanded use in Tennessee.

State Representative Antonio Parkinson is pushing the Freedom to Farm Act, which would let Tennesseans grow marijuana at home. Parkinson says:

“It is, whatever their personal uses. We don’t want to know and we don’t. The government does not need to know.”

If passed, the bill would allow one adult per household to grow up to 15 marijuana plants. Parkinson emphasized the plants could not be sold or removed from the property:

“It is not to be sold, is not to be bartered. It is not to be taken off their property. If it’s taken off that property or if you’re caught selling it, then you will be subject to all of the existing criminal marijuana laws.”

Republican Senator Ferrell Haile of Gallatin introduced legislation requiring the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR) to study how a medical marijuana program could be created in the state.

Senator Mark Pody said the federal reclassification could benefit both patients and those previously incarcerated:

“I think it’s going to help us not only with the health but those that have been incarcerated.”

The bill to study medical marijuana is currently set to be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Lawmakers from both parties continue to weigh the potential benefits and risks of expanding marijuana use in Tennessee.
