More and more people are exploring medical marijuana, also called cannabis, as a treatment option for various chronic health conditions, including Parkinson’s disease. Several states have legalized medical cannabis, but because federal drug laws have prevented scientific investigations on cannabis and its components for many years, much is still unknown about its use for medical purposes. Patients have questions about it, and physicians are still feeling their way through the landscape of medicinal cannabis use. Dr. Danny Bega of Northwestern University’s Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center in Chicago, a Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence, sheds light on some of the issues and concerns surrounding the use of medicinal cannabis.

Medical Cannabis is legal in 33 states now despite having a 94% national support rating. Medical marijuana has helped thousands with cancer, Parkinsons, epilepsy, chronic pain, neurological disorders and so many other illnesses to be able to obtain a quality of life that was not reachable through “traditional, mainstream” treatment. Medical cannabis is also known to help people with depression, anxiety, mood disorders, lack of sleep. We decided to take my mom who has Parkinson’s Disease to see a cannabis doctor, Dr. Junella Chin, and see if CBD oil could provide some comfort for her. We documented the appointment so you can learn some of the benefits of CBD oil as it is used to treat Parkinsons patients. Check it out!

Thailand has become the first country in Southeast Asia to legalise the use of cannabis as a drug. Marijuana is said to be able to treat various diseases including Parkinson’s, asthma, insomnia, autism and even cancer. But there are also studies that have shown the negative effects cannabis, such as brain damage and addiction.

While hemp plants are now grown at the Royal Agriculture Pangda in Samoeng, weed remains illegal and banned in Thailand. “We will make the public understand that it’s for medical purposes only, not for recreation,” said Niyom Termsrisuk, the Secretary-General of Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB). The Thai military conducts search and destroy mission in the hills of Chiang Rai to rid of illegal drug plantations.

Countries like Philippines and Malaysia are considering legalising medical marijuana, possibly indicating a turning point on the region’s long-standing tough war on drugs. Carrying and transporting of drugs however, still result in death penalty in countries like Singapore.
