Minnesota’s Medical Cannabis Industry Experiences Success, Challenges

Minnesota Medical Solutions opened its door to state legislators this fall, presenting policymakers and other key officials a glimpse into the start and progress of the state’s medical cannabis industry, which was authorized by the legislature in 2014.

“We’ve been blown away by the results we’ve seen in patients, particularly patients with seizure disorders,” said Dr. Kyle Kingsley, CEO of the company. According to Kingsley, the company offers over twenty different medical cannabis medications, and they are working to customize the medications according to the patient’s needs. “Every patient has different needs,” said Kingsley. “We’ve developed some treatment algorithms to help people work their way through with what works for them.”

The early results impressed legislators who toured the facility. “I’m just really impressed with the science that’s going on here,” said Senator Mary Kiffmeyer, R-Big Lake. “Eleven months up and running, that makes it exceptional. Minnesota good!” Kiffmeyer exclaimed.

Despite some early success, the industry faces challenges. According to Kingsley, “The biggest challenge right now is price control, and it is important to me as a physician that this is accessible to all patients.” Senator Scott Dibble, DFL-Mpls., echoed his concern. “The costs aren’t distributed across a large enough customer base,” Dibble emphasized. “We don’t have really vigorous marketplace competition that these costs are becoming a real barrier. That people have to drive so far to get what they need, and that people who are suffering certain conditions just aren’t able to get some access to relief through cannabis,” Dibble underscored in citing industry problems.

Ensuring competition in production, pricing and distribution will likely keep the issue of medical cannabis on the legislative agenda in coming sessions.

Facts about Medical Cannabis

Facts about #medical #Cannabis
1. Who consumes the most?
The United States is the world’s largest medical‑cannabis market. In 2024, combined medical and adult‑use sales exceeded $31 billion, and projections for 2025 reach $35 billion. No other country comes close to these volumes.
2. European leader
In Europe, Germany is out in front: by 2027 more than 311 000 patients are expected to hold official cannabis prescriptions.
3. Three indications with the strongest evidence
Robust, “gold‑standard” data support medical cannabis only for:
• chronic pain,
• chemotherapy‑induced nausea and vomiting,
• spasticity in multiple sclerosis.
4. Other common conditions
Physicians also prescribe #cannabinoid medicines for rare epilepsies (Epidyolex), post‑traumatic stress disorder, migraine, Crohn’s disease, and HIV/AIDS‑related appetite loss. The evidence is weaker here, but clinical data are growing.
5. Medical ≠ “regular” cannabis
Medical products are tightly controlled for CBD : THC ratio, purity, and absence of pesticides. Most programmes prohibit smoking; oils, capsules, sprays, or vaporisers are preferred. Recreational strains, by contrast, often contain two‑to‑three times more THC and have unpredictable profiles.
6. Authorised medicines
Key products include Sativex (a 1 : 1 CBD/THC oromucosal spray for MS spasticity) and Epidyolex (pure CBD solution for seizures). Dronabinol and nabilone are synthetic THC analogues used for nausea and weight loss.
7. Geography of legalisation
Thirty‑seven US states plus the District of Columbia—and more than 50 countries worldwide—run official medical‑cannabis programmes.
8. Money and trends
The global medical‑cannabis market is valued at about $21 billion (2025) and is forecast to reach $68 billion by 2033. Demand is rising 7‑8 % per year, especially in the Asia‑Pacific region.
9. Side effects
The most typical are dizziness, dry mouth, increased appetite, and a transient rise in heart rate. High THC doses can trigger anxiety or short‑term cognitive impairment, so doctors titrate the dose gradually.
10. What’s next?
Research continues: scientists are exploring cannabinoids as opioid alternatives for pain, anti‑inflammatory agents in IBD, and even adjuvant oncology therapies. Regulators remain cautious, approving new indications only when evidence is strong.

What is medical cannabis?

Medical cannabis refers to cannabis or cannabinoid‑based medicines produced under pharmaceutical GMP and dispensed only by prescription for specific conditions (chronic pain, MS spasticity, CINV, rare epilepsies, etc.).
• THC, CBD, and terpene content are strictly standardised.
• Batches are tested for pesticides, heavy metals, and microbes.
• Smoking is often banned; oils, sprays, and vaporisation are preferred.

What is recreational cannabis?

Recreational cannabis is the plant or product consumed for non‑medical purposes (relaxation, psychoactive effect).
• Typically contains higher THC levels (10 – 30 %+).
• Quality and safety are regulated on legal markets—or unregulated on illicit ones.
• Dosing is chosen by the user, not a doctor, which raises the risk of side effects.

Bottom line:
• Botany gives us sativa, indica, ruderalis.
• Chemotypes tell us how much THC and CBD a plant contains.
• Legal status splits cannabis into industrial, medical, and recreational.
• Medical cannabis is “pharma‑grade” and prescription‑only.
• Recreational cannabis is “for leisure,” higher in THC, with self‑selected doses.

How Kentucky will handle medical marijuana as patients across the state continue applying

Dr. James Weeks began authorizing patients for a medical marijuana card in Ohio six years ago, and he just started in Northern Kentucky in late 2024 in advance of that state opening medical cannabis sales sometime later this year: https://tinyurl.com/bdcmke84

What’s all the buzz about CBD oil? | Just The FAQs

CBD, or cannabidiol, is said to help alleviate pain and certain disorders. It has exploded in popularity since President Trump legalized the cultivation of hemp, but is CBD a medical miracle or just another fad?

RELATED: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfY2plkH7pw

Is America on the verge of going CBD-crazy? There’s some evidence that we’re headed that way.

Cannabidiol, or CBD – an active but not psychoactive compound found in marijuana (that is, it won’t get you high) – has been credited with near-magical powers. Its proponents claim that it can combat everything from acne to depression to Parkinson’s disease.

While scientists say that it has indeed proven useful for treating childhood epilepsy and may be useful for curing insomnia, anxiety, and some chronic pain, many of its other supposed benefits have yet to be proven. That hasn’t stopped a lot of Americans from giving it a try.

Three-month outcomes for patients with chronic pain using cannabis-based medical products

Anne Schlag, PhD, Drug Science, London, UK, shares real-world registry data from patients using cannabis-based medical products for chronic pain, after 3-months of use. The registry, Project T21, aims to advance scientific evidence on medical cannabis and has enrolled over 3,500 patients using cannabis-based medical products for a range of conditions. Chronic pain was the most commonly reported reason for medical cannabis use and initial baseline data revealed low general health scores among these participants. However, 3-month data from 618 patients demonstrated significant improvements across general health, quality of life, mood, and sleep quality. Notably, both pain intensity and pain interference were significantly decreased. Dr Schlag also highlighted a trend towards reduction in opioid use in this population. Among the 350 patients who reported opiod use, the average morphine milligram equivalent (MME), a common metric for opioid dosage, fell from 45mg/day at baseline to 19mg/day at 3 months. Further analysis is ongoing, as research continues to explore the implications and intricacies of the data. This interview took place at The BNA 2023 International Festival of Neuroscience in Brighton, UK.

Medical Marijuana For Neuropathy Pain: Marijuana for Beginners | Discover Marijuana

In today’s video Tim and Blake talk about how medical marijuana effect can be used to help with neuropathy, including neuropathic pain. One of the benefits of using CBD, THC and CBG for neuropathic pain is that you can often treat the pain without causing further issues like some medications do.

Pain is one of the most common ailments medical marijuana is used for. Neuropathic pain is a special case and today Tim, Blake and Josh talk about how adding CBD and CBG to your medical cannabis regime might be beneficial.

What questions do you have about medical marijuana for neuropathic pain?

Tim Pickett, a Utah QMP and founder of http://utahmarijuana.org, meets with patients daily to recommend medical cannabis. Having a certain CBD dosage on hand as you ease into this treatment is highly recommended, especially if you are unfamiliar or made uncomfortable by the euphoric head high that comes with cannabis. CBD will help to tap that feeling down a bit.

Your other host, Blake Smith, CSO of http://zionmedicinal.com, a Utah CBD and cannabis company, has studied cannabis and the endocannabinoid system for years, and it shows. While Tim takes over how to use CBD, THC, and loads of other cannabinoids to help different ailments, Blake will explain WHY CBD works for Parkinson’s, pain, seizures, etc. for a full spectrum view of your treatment. We believe this will help patients take control of their own healthcare — something that hasn’t been possible in many other areas.

We are so excited to welcome a very special guest — Josh Fitzgerald — to Discover Marijuana season 2! Josh is Pharmacist in Charge at Deseret Wellness’ Provo location. He’ll be joining Tim & Blake this season to give a fresh perspective on Medical Cannabis in the Utah space and beyond.

Cannabis & Gut Health: Medical Marijuana Science

Laura Lagano, MS, RDN, CDN is an Integrative Clinical Nutritionist based in New Jersey. She has advanced training in functional medicine, which has her positioned her to become one of the first certified RDNs with the Institute of Functional Medicine. Boasting years of experience in food, nutrition + wellness communications, as well as in health curricula and continuing medical education development, Laura possesses a unique combination of science and communications savvy.

Laura is co-founder of the http://holisticcannabisnetwork.com

Holistic Cannabis Summit: http://holisticcannabissummit.com

Key Takeaways:

07:06 Cannabis Stigma: The cannabis plant has been bred by farmers to be high in THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive component. The plant originally has a much lower THC content. It is a complex plant with many compounds and many cannabinoids that produce different effects. CBD (cannabidiol) modulates the THC effect. Consuming the plant with all of its compounds is beneficial. It does not need to be smoked. It can be as a tincture, as an oil, an alcohol base, in an edible, as a patch, or as a topical.

09:42 The Endocannabinoid System: This is a system of receptors throughout our bodies, called CB1 and CB2 receptors and others. They sit on the cells in our body within various systems. These receptors are in our brain, our gut, our immune system and other places. There are zero deaths from cannabis overdose because we do not have these receptors in our brainstem. You may react to an overdose in some other way, depending upon your genetics.

13:16 Cannabis Seizure Treatments: Cannabis has application for seizure disorders. The ratio of CBD to THC for people with seizures depends upon the person. It gives the patient the ability to titrate. Most of the time for the effects of cannabis, less is more.

17:36 Health Benefits of Daily Cannabis Consumption: The endocannabinoid system exists in all humans and animals all the way down to sea squirts. This can be upregulated by cannabinoids and other lifestyle behaviors like exercise, sex or for babies, breastfeeding. Cannabinoids are adaptogenic.

23:12 The Benefits of THC: There are different levels of THC from hemp to cannabis, from strain to strain and plant to plant. THC can modulate many effects in the body, including immune function. The THC component is important for treating seizures.

27:12 Influences upon Our Body’s Endocannabinoid System: Besides exercise, sex, and meditation, there may be other ways to influence it as well. However, we are unable to measure the endocannabinoid system. There is much research to be done. Most of the research has been done outside the US, particularly in Israel, where it is not federally illegal.

29:23 The Anti-Inflammatory and Immune Modulatory Effects: The federal government deems cannabis as a schedule one drug, meaning that it has not benefit. The federal government has a patent on cannabis as an antioxidant. Cannabis is an incredible anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Cannabis helps to tighten the junctures in leaky gut and calms the digestive system. Cannabis is being used as an exit drug from addiction to alcohol, cocaine, opiates and amphetamines.

32:50 Cannabis and Mitochondria: There is research upon the use of cannabis and mitochondrial disorders. It is already being seen as effective with those of us with MS and ALS, mitochondrial disorders.

34:49 Contaminants: By consuming the cannabis plant, you receive the benefits of the entourage compounds. However, some states require that the plant not be smoked. Extractions could involve butane or CO2 and other things could be added. During one water extraction, researchers found high levels of alcohol and butane. This turned out to be residue from equipment cleaning. In addition, there are no guidelines for organic cannabis.

37:11 The Best Delivery Method: Laura thinks that all formats can be valuable. Most practitioners would recommend vaporizing, rather than smoking. Within 3 seconds to a minute after smoked cannabis hits your lungs, your blood levels will be in full cannabinoid effect. Most edibles, cannabis infused food, are sugar laden junk food. It will take from 45 minutes to 2 hours to reach effect. For edibles, go low and start slow. Oils work well for children with seizures. You need to make sure it is quality oil.

42:58 Better Strains: Sativa is the more calming strain and Inica is the more uplifting strain. The strain for seizure disorder would have a higher level of CBD and lower THC. The strain for ADHD might have a CBD derived from cannabis and very little THC. Durban Poison strain is popular for ADD. It has a higher THC content, so the dosage is very low.

A Couple of major drawbacks of getting a Medical Marijuana card.

If you are a Florida Snowbird, you cannot reorder from your supplier and have shipped across state lines. It’s Illegal!

Also, if you are driving home and happen to get stopped, you could be arrested. Or if you are taking a product that has the minimum amount of THC (.03 ) it’s possible that you could be arrested for being HIgh.

Jeff Sessions Claims Medical Marijuana Is Responsible For Opioid Epidemic!

Jeff Sessions Suggests People Take Aspirin And “Tough It Out”, Tampa, FL,
https://youtu.be/Y18ZegbYm6k

Marijuana is a gateway drug that is responsible for the opioid epidemic in the U.S., according to Attorney General Jeff Sessions who said he has no sympathy for sufferers of chronic pain who use medical marijuana to relieve their symptoms.
During an address at the U.S. Attorney’s office in Tampa, Florida, Sessions said chronic pain sufferers should simply “take an aspirin and tough it out” rather than make use of the natural palliative powers of medical marijuana.
