Your Guide to Successfully Watering your Cannabis Plants

If only watering your cannabis plants was as easy as giving them some water once a week.
Unfortunately, it isn’t, so get the watering element of your plant care wrong, and very quickly you’ll have dead or dying plants.

It might surprise you to learn that it is easier to overwater your cannabis plants than underwater them.

However, before you start thinking that watering is seriously complicated, it isn’t, you just need to follow a few basic rules.

First off there is pot size. For your seedlings, you want a small pot with a light and airy growing medium. You want to be able to get the growing medium nice and moist, but still well drained so that it will dry out.

If you put seedlings in a large pot, invariably the soil will never dry out to any extent, and the roots will begin to rot.

Once transferred to a large pot, you want to make sure that the soil, or growing medium, drains easily. The idea is for the soil to be moist, not soaking wet.

The pot should have holes in the bottom so that excess water can drain off, and the pot should be slightly raised so that it doesn’t stand in any excess water.

If your soil remains too wet, it will encourage the growth of mould and bacteria on the surface.
In a good set-up, the surface of the soil should dry out between watering – this stops mould and bacteria forming.

When you water the soil, it should take roughly two or three minutes for excess water to drain through. If it takes a lot longer, then the soil is too heavy and will remain too wet and compacted around the root system.

Adding perlite to soil is a good way to encourage healthy drainage.

While you can’t tell how wet the soil is at a depth of greater than six centimetres, sticking your finger in the soil is a good way to check if the plant needs watering. If it is dry all the way down, chances are it needs watering.

If you can feel that the soil is damp, leave things alone.

Often a good way to tell if a plant needs watering is to lift the pot – if it feels appreciably lighter than it did when it has just been watered, it’s time for a top-up.

The only other thing to keep an eye on, is the pH of the soil, as too much water can change it from the optimum 6.3-6.8.

So remember, cannabis plants are not the same as goldfish, so they don’t need to be immersed in water 24/7!

Too many people make this common mistake when cooking with cannabis!

Actually, there are two major mistakes you can make where cannabis and cooking are concerned.

First, it is the fact that it takes longer for cannabis you have ingested to affect you than cannabis that you have smoked.

When smoking cannabis, the THC which gives you the high enters the bloodstream almost instantaneously via the lungs.

When eating cannabis, it can take anything up to two hours for the digestive juices in the stomach to break down the cannabis in anything you have eaten, and only then will you begin to feel any effect.

And that is where most people make their first mistake. Because nothing seems to be happening with cannabis you have eaten, the temptation is to take some more of what you have eaten, and then some more again.

Unfortunately, when the cannabis does begin to take effect, the effect is usually quite severe and, unlike a smoking high which may last for a couple of hours, the effects from ingested cannabis can last up to twelve yours.

Now that’s not really what you want to hear when you realise you have consumed four-times more hash brownies than you should have!

But that’s only half the story.

When cooking with cannabis, first you have to decarboxylate it.

Decarboxywhat?

Decarboxylate it, which is a fancy term for cooking it.

To create THC, the chemical in cannabis which gives you the high, you have to bake the cannabis you have harvested in order to break down the THCA in it to create THC.

Basically, by heating the cannabis, you are removing the carbon in THCA, but you have to be careful not to overheat or burn the cannabis.

The best way to decarboxylate your cannabis is to grind it up into as fine a powder as possible, place It on some baking parchment and cook it in the oven for approximately 45 minutes at 225 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you really want to get the best results, however, you could consider baking it at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 75 minutes.

Don’t forget to keep the kitchen well ventilated during the decarboxylating process as otherwise the very strong smell of cannabis will pervade the atmosphere throughout your home.

As for the dosage of cannabis you use – well there isn’t really a recipe book for that, and it is very much a case of trial and error.

However, to avoid unnecessary ‘disasters’, we recommend you start off with small amounts as part of your ingredients, and then tweak the quantity accordingly.

LED vs. HPS vs. CFL vs. Metal Halide Lamps

So, having covered seed germination in an earlier video, we now want to talk about another important aspect of growing your plants.
Lighting.

To grow, plants need water, light and nutrients, and the quantity and quality of each will affect how your plants grow.

At this point we have to state for legal reasons that we cannot possibly state what kind of plants we are talking about, but we leave it up to you to form your own, educated opinion!

When it comes to a choice of lighting, there are four types that are generally used for growing plants.
Light-emitting diode (LED) lights, High-pressure Sodium Vapour (HPS) lights, compact fluorescent lights (CFL) and Metal-halide lights.

So, what’s the difference and why does it matter?

There are three principal properties of all of these lights, and your choice to help with growing your plants will depend on just how many plants you have, and the environment where you have them growing.

The three main properties are the brightness of the light, the colour spectrum of the light, and the heat they radiate.

So, with LED and CFL lights the coolest and least bright – these are good for newly germinated seed plants as you don’t want to frazzle them in the first few days and can be suspended immediately above your seedlings.

Once your plants are more established, you can then choose between the brighter and warmer lights.
It is generally accepted that it is best to start your plants off under a metal halide light as the blue spectrum is good for leafy growth, then change to HPS lights when you want the warmer, red spectrum to encourage flowers to grow.

Finally, you need to take into account that the more heat a light generates, the greater the running cost, which can mean a massive electricity bill, which might take some explaining!

Understanding the different types of hermaphroditism in cannabis, including genetic predisposition, rodelization, and chemical induction, is crucial for effective cultivation and breeding. While each method has its own set of advantages and challenges, the knowledge of these processes allows growers to make informed decisions in their breeding practices. Unfortunately, there seems to be an active interest to is not enough knowledge accessible to the public and the consumer market for cannabis seeds is completely unregulated, so it is up to us to self regulate.

There are 3 different types of hermaphrodites known in cannabis and they are outlined in this video:

1. Weak Genetics 1:02
One of the primary reasons for hermaphroditism in cannabis plants is genetic predisposition. It occurs when the cannabis plant inherently possesses the genetic tendency to develop both male and female reproductive organs. This is a recessive genetic and any offspring from a hermaphrodite will carry the gene for hermaphroditism.
Weak genetics can lead to a higher likelihood of hermaphroditic traits being expressed under stress or less-than-ideal growing conditions. This is problematic for cultivators aiming for either purely female or purely male plants, as hermaphrodites can lead to unwanted pollination and a reduced yield of consumable flowers.

2. Rodelization 1:40
Rodelization is a natural form of hermaphroditism that occurs as a stress response in female cannabis plants. When a female plant is not pollinated and reaches the end of its lifecycle, it may develop male reproductive organs as a last resort to self-pollinate and produce seeds. This happens after a plant is ready to harvest and it is a natural survival mechanism. Breeders can use this method to create feminized seeds, but it is important to note that this method is less controlled and less reliable compared to other feminization techniques. All of the offspring will also have a genetic predisposition for rodelization.

3. Chemical Inhibitors: Silver Thiosulfate & Colloidal Silver 2:10
In contrast to genetic and natural stress-induced hermaphroditism, certain chemicals can be used to deliberately induce hermaphroditism in cannabis plants. The most common chemicals used for this purpose are silver thiosulfate and colloidal silver.

A. Silver Thiosulfate (STS)
Silver thiosulfate is a compound that effectively inhibits the production of ethylene, a hormone responsible for flowering in cannabis plants. When applied to female plants, STS can lead to the development of male flowers, which contain female genetic material. This method is highly effective and controlled, making it a preferred choice for breeders looking to produce feminized seeds. The offspring produced will only turn to hermaphrodites when they are subjected these chemical inhibitors which are foreign to all soils and nutrients available in the cannabis grow space.

B. Similarly, colloidal silver, which consists of tiny silver particles suspended in liquid, is sprayed onto female plants. This also blocks ethylene production and triggers the development of male flowers. Colloidal silver is particularly popular among home growers due to its accessibility and ease of use, but it requires more applications than STS.

Which is best for you – autoflowering or photoperiod cannabis plants?

Like so many aspects of growing cannabis, decisions are ultimately made based on personal choice. Well, either that or a total lack of knowledge and understanding!

Here we have yet another important decision to be made, but is it really a simple decision to make? We actually think it is.

You see, photoperiod cannabis plants require more skill, time, commitment and expertise than auto flowering plants.

You need to be especially careful when you change the lighting schedule in order to change the growth of the plant from leaves and stem, to the production of flowers and subsequent, juicy, trichome-rich buds.

Ordinarily, for photoperiod plants you would have an 18:6 lighting schedule for the first five or six weeks, then you switch to a 12:12 schedule when growing indoors.

You see, autoflowering plants generally tend to be smaller in size when they reach maturity.

And, the smaller the plant, the smaller the crop.

So, ultimately, autoflowering plants are great for those of you who have never grown cannabis before, who don’t have the time and ability to carefully control lighting schedules, or if you are not looking for a bumper yield.

Photoperiod cannabis plants are great for those of you who like to be fully involved in he growing process and who have gained sufficient experience to know what to do in order to maximise both yield and quality of cannabis produced.
Both photoperiod and auto flowers have their pros and cons, and its really down to you to decide on which best suits your requirements.
