Marijuana Facts PSA 2

Did you know that if a person first uses marijuana before age 15, they are 4 times more likely to develop a marijuana use disorder as adults? Youth Resource Alliance and our partners are encouraging parents to talk to their kids about marijuana.

This PSA has been developed with funding provided to Northwestern Community Services. Partner agencies include Family Youth Initiative, Page Alliance for Community Action, Warren Coalition, CLEAN Inc, and the Northern Shenandoah Valley Substance Abuse Coalition.

Criteria for Cannabis Use Disorder:
According to the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition), the criteria for Cannabis Use Disorder is as follows:

Use of cannabis for at least a one-year period, with the presence of at least two of the following symptoms, accompanied by significant impairment of functioning and distress:

1. Difficulty controlling the use of cannabis/marijuana/thc- the drug is used in larger amounts and over a longer period than intended.

2. Repeated failed efforts to discontinue or reduce the amount of cannabis that is used

3. An inordinate amount of time is occupied acquiring, using, or recovering from the effects of cannabis.

4. Cravings or desires to use cannabis. This can include intrusive thoughts and images, and dreams about cannabis or olfactory perceptions of the smell of cannabis due to preoccupation with cannabis.

5. Continued use of cannabis despite adverse consequences from its use, such as criminal charges, ultimatums of abandonment from spouse/partner/friends, and poor productivity.

6. Other important activities in life, such as work, school, hygiene, and responsibility to family and friends, are superseded by the desire to use cannabis.

7. Cannabis is used in potentially dangerous contexts, such as operating a motor vehicle.

8. Use of cannabis continues despite awareness of physical or psychological problems being caused by the marijuana abuse- e.g., anergia, lack of motivation, chronic cough.

9. Tolerance to Cannabis, as defined by progressively larger amounts of cannabis is needed to obtain the psychoactive effect experienced when use first started or, noticeably reduced effect of use of the same amount of cannabis

10. Withdrawal, defined as the typical withdrawal syndrome associated with cannabis, or cannabis or a similar substance is used to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

11. Unsuccessful efforts to sustain control or cut back marijuana consumption.

There are few places in the world where you can walk into a licensed shop and buy marijuana for recreational use. Uruguay is one (sold in pharmacies). Canada is another. They’re joined by 21 US states, representing 48 percent of the American population, up from zero states in 2013.

That means that in Idaho, people caught growing or selling weed face mandatory jail time and tens of thousands of dollars in fines while their counterparts next door in Washington can enroll in a state-funded mentor-ship program for cannabis business planning and development. And states like Washington are violating both US federal law which prohibits any use of marijuana, and also international law, which prohibits non-medical uses.

That’s messy. But it reflects that although large majorities agree that the criminalization of cannabis use was a mistake, there’s less consensus about how exactly to move forward.

Will Jones III, the Director of Community Engagement & Outreach at Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM), maintains that the commercialization of weed would lead to more harm than good. He prefers decriminalization instead, which removes criminal penalties, treating marijuana possession more like a traffic ticket. (Six US states have decriminalized recreational cannabis without legalizing.) However, SAM prioritizes fighting legalization and reducing drug use over promoting decriminalization.

SAM co-drafted the Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act which makes it easier to study marijuana and develop marijuana-derived drugs but without descheduling marijuana as a schedule I illicit substance. President Biden signed it into law in December of 2022.

Paul Armentano, the Deputy Director of NORML, has spent decades advocating for legalization of marijuana and says decriminalization doesn’t go far enough. NORML represents the interests of cannabis consumers and has been advocating for the removal of criminal penalties for recreational marijuana since 1970.

We thought both of their perspectives were worth hearing but didn’t want to stage a traditional debate where viewers so often come away confused about what to believe. So we created a format that would help establish a shared foundation of facts while still communicating what each of these advocates believe is the most important information to know.

In this new take on a debate, we asked both participants to identify facts that their opponent would have to concede are true. They were given an opportunity to review their adversary’s facts in advance and in a video call agreed on a set of six. In the video, you’ll see those facts presented, with each participant given the opportunity to add a “footnote” to their opponent’s facts.

Marijuana Use and Its Impact | Fact Check

The fact that marijuana and cannabis products are increasingly legal doesn’t mean that using marijuana is without risk. For example, marijuana use is the primary reason young people enter substance use treatment. High levels of THC, which is the chemical in marijuana that most affects the brain, has been linked to a variety of mental health problems. Finally, marijuana is the drug most often found in the blood of drivers involved in car accidents.

In our latest video, recovery advocate and mother Carleah Summers provides all the details parents and family members need to know about marijuana – what it is, how it works and the negative effects that could result from using it.

“Problems with marijuana use can be prevented,” Summers says. “The longer teens delay use, the less likely they are to develop a marijuana use disorder or addiction. We can all play a part by supporting policies and programs that prevent or reduce marijuana use among teens and by not normalizing its use as a harmless way to have fun.”

Health Risks of Marijuana Use

While the long-term public health impact of marijuana legalization is yet to be determined, many experts agree that marijuana use is risky for some people and addictive for others. Listen in as host William C. Moyers talks with psychiatrist Marvin D. Seppala, MD, about the health risks of marijuana (especially for teens), the difference between heavy use and marijuana addiction, and how to find help if you’re concerned about marijuana use or dependence.

Treating Pain with Medical Marijuana

“I could see endocannabinoids as being a really good conduit to relieving the opioid epidemic.” Nathan Fried, assistant professor of biology, discusses the potential of medical marijuana for replacing opioids as a pain treatment.

Fried joined the Rutgers University–Camden faculty in the fall of 2018. He specializes in neuroscience and is currently studying the connections between sleep and pain, to identify opioid alternatives for chronic pain treatment.

Marijuana Facts – Addiction

In October of 2012, the BestCare Treatment Services Prevention staff and the Jefferson County Prevention Task Force hosted an informative statewide Marijuana Summit in partnership with Deschutes and Crook county in Madras, Oregon. The information learned became a catalyst for prevention staff and community coalitions in Central Oregon to further educate the public about the facts of marijuana. This collaboration resulted in the development of a Marijuana Summit Fact Summary. The summary was disseminated to community partners as well as all State Senators and Representatives in Oregon. Also developed were radio and print ads.

The goal of this work is to provide factual information so that citizens can make informed health-related decisions based on credible data.

Be My Friend – http://www.myspace.com/psychtruth

According to the American Psychiatric Associations, Cannabis (Marijuana) intoxication is an official mental disorder listed in the DSM or Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders.

This isn’t to be confused with pot addiction, dependency or abuse, this is just being high.

The makers of this video in no way condone the use of marijuana or psychiatry. Never do anything illegal or stupid.

Factually marijuana use has been associated with psychosis and it is not believed that pot is conducive to good mental health.

Cannabis seeds as souvenir in Romania – vpro Metropolis

Weed is illegal and also taboo in Romania. But still you can buy cannabis seeds as a souvenir, but you may not plant the seeds. Gabi sells the seeds, but he always warns customers: ‘It’s on your own risk, if you use the seeds for other purposes. If you use weed and the police catches you, you’re going to jail for a long, time. ‘It is ‘better’ to go to jail for murder, instead of going to jail for weed.’

vpro Metropolis was a video project by Dutch broadcast organisation vpro, that ran from 2008 to 2015. Metropolis is made by a global collective of young filmmakers and TV producers, reporting on remarkable stories from their own country/city. We made a trip around the globe on one single issue: from local beauty ideals to Elvis impersonators, to what’s it like being gay, or an outcast or a dog in different cultures.
