Seeds Can Be Direct Seeded, But…
While seeds can be direct seeding this is often not done with cannabis simply because of the elevated temperatures cannabis tends to prefer to germinate.
Seedlings or clones can typically what is added to a field of cannabis.

Direct Soil Planting Advantages
Ease of planting and lack of need to supply growing substrate from outside sources.
Plants can develop a deep root system
Plants will often require less water.

Direct Soil Disadvantages
Soil needs to be prepared ahead of time
If soil is waterlogged this can stunt growth of plants.
Weed control can be an issue.
