TRANSCRIPT:

There are plenty of confusing things going on in the world of government these days, and the status of cannabis across the states is only one of them. So, while we can’t explain to you why Melania Trump keeps wearing those unfortunately-named bowties, we can try to clear up a few details about our favorite all-natural medical plant!

Currently in the United States, cannabis remains illegal at the federal level. It is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, alongside substances like heroin, LSD, and ecstasy. And despite the fact that this categorization doesn’t seem to make much sense to most people in the scientific community, or to many government officials, cannabis remains tangled up in the same web as those other, really scary drugs.

Movement on the federal level is slow, though some promise was seen in late March when a democratic representative of Hawaii challenged lawmakers to create a bill that will decriminalize cannabis across the country. All of us in the cannabiz are eagerly waiting to see what comes of this latest, hesitant step toward legalization, but since we might be waiting awhile, let’s turn to the individual states.

Despite cannabis’ federal status, many states have set their own, regional laws surrounding the plant, and the results range from widespread legalization to the cautious allowance of medical cannabis for treating a few select conditions.

Let’s take a look at the most liberal states, first.

Colorado has taken the world by storm; it is one of the first and most vocal supporters of the cannabis legalization movement.

Residents of the state are allowed to use cannabis for both medical treatment and recreation, and anyone over the age of 21 can carry up to an ounce of cannabis. Furthermore, Growers Choice couldn’t be more pleased that people are also permitted to grow their own, all-natural medicine right in their own homes!

Seven more states have legalized cannabis for unregistered self-medication and enjoyment:
California,
Washington,
Oregon,
Nevada,
Alaska,
Maine,
and Massachusetts.

Fun fact: did you know recreational cannabis has been legal in Alaska since the 1970s? They were way ahead of the game!

About 23 other states currently have decent medical cannabis laws in place. We’ll say “about”, since the way things have been going, there’s a good chance another state or two will be added to the list between filming this episode and sharing it!

Of the remaining states, cannabis might be allowed for very specific medical conditions – like in Alabama and Mississippi where only people with severe epilepsy can use cannabis products to treat their seizures. Iowa also allows cannabis for epilepsy, but only high-CBD products with less than .3 % THC.

In states where only medical cannabis is legal, many patients still struggle to have their illness added to the list of “Qualifying Conditions”. Though cancer tops almost every list, Colorado only recently added PTSD to their list of acceptable conditions, and despite some good evidence, Alzheimer’s is still absent from many lists.

Advocacy, from regular people as well as lawmakers (and, of course, celebrities) is what brought cannabis this far, and continued support will bring it further. Legalization is on the horizon, and we’re personally looking forward to the day when everyone can treat their illness – or just relax – with a quick vape or a special brownie.
