Today on the Body of Wonder Podcast we speak with Dr. Ethan Russo, a neurologist and psychopharmacology researcher. Dr. Russo has spent decades researching exactly how cannabis impacts the human body, covering well-known compounds such as THC or CDB, as well as other powerful compounds, like CBG and CBDA.

Cannabis research has caught the attention of medical providers and patients for its many potential health benefits. For decades, cannabis has been categorized as a Schedule 1 drug, which is defined as a drug with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. While 33 states (as of January 2021) have approved its medical use, it continues to be federally prohibited.

Cannabis contains more than 100 active compounds that react with cannabinoid receptors in our nervous systems. In spite of prohibitive policies, medical researchers around the world have managed to conduct studies. Research reveals a growing body of evidence of the therapeutic potentials. From tempering chronic pain to reducing anxiety, cannabis holds the potential for use.

Dr. Weil discusses the complicated history of cannabis in U.S culture and suggests why it has not widely been accepted as medicine. Dr. Russo addresses the concern over long term cognition problems. Dr. Maizes raises the important question — is it possible to achieve the health benefits of cannabis and not experience the psychoactive effects or “high.” With legal access to cannabis on the rise, we discuss the future medical applications of this substance.

Let’s face it cannabis is a smelly plant. That’s why I’m using auto flower cannabis to grow outdoors in Canada. This reduces the smell indoor as well still giving me high gills. With photoperiod Canabis I find that it can be a more labour intensive process. My hopes are that the autoflower with give me the luxury to simply water without moving the plant around.

When growing outdoors in Canada daylight hours are REALLY long. So my hope is the autoflower cannabis will make this MUCH easier.

Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are YouTube, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s YouTube channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Is America on the verge of going CBD-crazy? There’s some evidence that we’re headed that way.

Cannabidiol, or CBD – an active but not psychoactive compound found in marijuana (that is, it won’t get you high) – has been credited with near-magical powers. Its proponents claim that it can combat everything from acne to depression to Parkinson’s disease.

While scientists say that it has indeed proven useful for treating childhood epilepsy and may be useful for curing insomnia, anxiety, and some chronic pain, many of its other supposed benefits have yet to be proven. That hasn’t stopped a lot of Americans from giving it a try.

With federal reform still facing hurdles, what does Trump’s stance mean for the future of cannabis policy in the United States?

The Trump administration has consistently maintained that the decision to legalize adult-use cannabis should not be made at the federal level, but rather by state governments. This aligns with Trump’s political philosophy of states’ rights and limited federal intervention, allowing states to create cannabis laws that reflect their unique needs.

Currently, 24 states have legalized recreational marijuana, while 39 states allow medical cannabis. However, the lack of federal legalization presents major obstacles, including banking restrictions, high tax burdens, and legal uncertainties for cannabis businesses.

The STATES Act aims to address these challenges by protecting state-regulated cannabis businesses from federal prosecution and providing greater access to financial services—offering a broader solution compared to the SAFE Banking Act.

While Trump may support cannabis rescheduling and job creation, full federal legalization remains unlikely under his leadership. The future of cannabis reform will largely depend on legislative efforts and continued state-level expansion.

A Texas doctor who has spent years researching the effects of marijuana is sounding the alarm about culture’s mainstreaming of the drug, warning its effects are anything but benign. Dr. Raymond Wiggins, an oral surgeon and author of “Weeding Out the Lies About Marijuana,” told CBN Digital marijuana is a drug that can have profound psychological and physical effects on the body.

“If you want to talk about psychosis, for those who start using marijuana at a young age and who use it on a regular basis, there’s a two and a half times risk of psychosis,” Wiggins said in a past interview. “One study … actually showed a six times risk for those who used it regularly.” He said research also shows young people who use the drug before age 18 are also at increased risk of psychosis, though the dangers don’t stop there.

“If you’re talking about depression and suicide, depression is greatly increased if you start smoking … it as a teenager,” Wiggins said. “And then, if you look at the statistics for depression, up until the age of 30, those who smoked it as a teenager are 37% more likely to be depressed in their young adult years, and even later on in life.” Watch him dive deeper into these issues.
