Right now, at the federal level, marijuana is classified as a schedule one drug, the same classification as heroin and LSD. President Trump says a preliminary decision on lowering that designation could come soon. CBS News Homeland Security correspondent Nicole Sganga has more.

At a White House briefing earlier this week, President Donald Trump delivered his clearest signal yet that federal cannabis reform could be on the horizon, telling reporters: “We’re looking at reclassification and we’ll make a determination over the next few weeks.”

On The TDR Cannabis in Five, hosted by Shadd Dales and presented by Dutchie, we explain exactly what Trump said, why it matters, and how this could reshape the U.S. cannabis market. If cannabis is reclassified from Schedule I to a less restrictive category like Schedule III, the shift would be immediate and far-reaching—reducing criminal penalties, opening the door for expanded medical research, and removing Section 280E tax restrictions that have weighed heavily on cannabis businesses for years.

President Trump said Monday his administration is “looking at” reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug.

Such a move would continue efforts begun by the Biden administration, which started the process to make marijuana a Schedule III drug in 2024 but did not finish it before former President Biden left office.

A Schedule III designation wouldn’t legalize marijuana, but criminal penalties would be lessened.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Trump told donors he was considering reclassifying marijuana, after industry groups paid millions of dollars to Trump’s political groups.

“We’re looking at reclassification, and we’ll make a determination over, I’d say, the next few weeks,” Trump said during a press conference about the federal government taking control of the District of Columbia’s police force.

How to grow cannabis. Wassup y’all?! I’m sharing my experience so far with this Mars Hydro TS-1000 150 Watt LED grow light from @MarsHydro_official

I am a complete beginner, and this my first time growing cannabis.

These plants were started under two 13 Watt CFL bulbs (your standard table lamp). Again, this is my first grow, so I appreciate all comments, knowledge, and explanations as to why your solution helps. Thank you in advance!

I’m new to editing and growing, so bare wit me! 🤣

The strains are bagseed Runtz, and one is a Gorilla Z Auto Flower from @FastBudsGenetics @FastBuds

I’m using 3 @Vivosun self watering pots as well. All cloth pots are 3 gallon except for one 5 gallon.

I’m also using the cloud 9 exhaust fan by @acinfinity
