3 Pros and 3 Cons to Federal Marijuana Legalization
Written by thcscout on . Posted in Legalization. No Comments on 3 Pros and 3 Cons to Federal Marijuana Legalization
First, the reason why Booker proposed this bill, is because federal legalization will reduce incarceration of minorities, “You see these marijuana arrests happening so much in our country, targeting certain communities — poor communities, minority communities — targeting people with an illness.” Under Booker’s bill, those aggravated by these disproportionate arrests could sue. With fewer marijuana arrests as a result of federal marijuana legalization, the nation would also waste less money on jails, so the government could use that money to help elsewhere. Many marijuana farmers fear federal legalization though, because it will reduce the quality of their flower as bigger corporations enter the market. This may be especially difficult for the local economies that rely on these marijuana farms, proving that federal legalization will both help and hinder many.

Medical Marijuana Doctor: How I Became One
Written by thcscout on . Posted in Medical. No Comments on Medical Marijuana Doctor: How I Became One
HOW DID I BECOME A MEDICAL MARIJUANA DOCTOR? or
HOW DID I GET INTO MEDICAL MARIJUANA
And, that’s the question I’ll be answering in this episode of Ask Dr. Patel.
I can tell you that it all serendipitously started by coming across an ad on Craigslist of all places. 🙂
So, just out of curiosity I clicked on the Medical and Health Jobs section. And, I came across an ad that said “Medical Marijuana Doctor Needed.” In the back of my mind, I remember thinking ”is this for real?” I had never heard of such a thing as a medical marijuana doctor until that moment.
From that point I kept on digging around for more information. I started by looking into the research.
I came across research in humans that showed some really compelling results. Participants in these studies were reporting that medical marijuana reduced pain for conditions like Fibromyalgia, Neuropathic (Nerve) Pain, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, etc. What I found most stunning is that some of these conditions are often resistant to conventional pain medications, which means that commonly prescribed pain medications don’t touch the pain in many of these conditions.
Then, I came across a study that showed that cannabis enhanced the effect of opioids. And, it was suggested in the study that the use of cannabis could help patients take lower doses of opioids.
Being raised in Jersey, I learned exercise a healthy dose of skepticism. So, I really needed to witness the results for myself before I actually bought into what the research showed. I needed to get a sense of how things played out clinically. So, I set off to work at a medical marijuana clinic in California to gain this clinical experience.
I went in expecting that medical marijuana would be one of the tools in the arsenal of treatments patients used to manage chronic pain.
But, instead I was taken aback by the results.
It didn’t just help to just reduce patient’s levels of pain. Many of my patients were coming off of the cocktail of prescription pain medications that they were on. That was a shocker. And, most importantly, it was improving the quality of their lives.
Patients are able to go back to doing the activities they enjoy. They were telling me that they were now able to go on long walks. They were able to swim, golf, and play tennis. They able to perform everyday tasks, like opening jars – something that many of us that don’t suffer with pain take for granted. And, I even had patients report that they were now able to carry their grandchildren without experiencing pain.
Patients also found that using medical marijuana helped to get their mind off the of the pain. And, in turn, they were able to concentrate better, which helped them to be more productive and improved their performance at work.
The patients I’ve treated have reported that the use of medical marijuana helps to reduce anxiety. It helps to patients to escape racing thoughts. It helps to reduce and even eliminate panic attacks.
And, I didn’t just see medical marijuana have an impact on chronic pain.
But I also saw patients with multiple sclerosis experience significantly fewer muscle spasms and therefore were able to sit more comfortably in their wheelchairs.
I also treated children who had seizures as often as every 10 minutes. But with the use of medical marijuana were able to play with their brothers and sisters for several hours at a time.
Then, I saw patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation who couldn’t hold down a sip of water. But, with the help of medical marijuana were finally able to reduce their nausea and feel hungry again.
I found myself impacting the lives of patients who were desperate for a solution that they otherwise weren’t finding in conventional medicine.
So, there you have it – my path to becoming a medical marijuana doctor. And, quite frankly, there’s no turning back at this point.
I hope this information gives you an idea of my why I’m so passionately pursuing my work as a medical marijuana doctor.
If you have questions for me, post them in the comments section below.

TRANSCRIPT:
There are plenty of confusing things going on in the world of government these days, and the status of cannabis across the states is only one of them. So, while we can’t explain to you why Melania Trump keeps wearing those unfortunately-named bowties, we can try to clear up a few details about our favorite all-natural medical plant!
Currently in the United States, cannabis remains illegal at the federal level. It is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, alongside substances like heroin, LSD, and ecstasy. And despite the fact that this categorization doesn’t seem to make much sense to most people in the scientific community, or to many government officials, cannabis remains tangled up in the same web as those other, really scary drugs.
Movement on the federal level is slow, though some promise was seen in late March when a democratic representative of Hawaii challenged lawmakers to create a bill that will decriminalize cannabis across the country. All of us in the cannabiz are eagerly waiting to see what comes of this latest, hesitant step toward legalization, but since we might be waiting awhile, let’s turn to the individual states.
Despite cannabis’ federal status, many states have set their own, regional laws surrounding the plant, and the results range from widespread legalization to the cautious allowance of medical cannabis for treating a few select conditions.
Let’s take a look at the most liberal states, first.
Colorado has taken the world by storm; it is one of the first and most vocal supporters of the cannabis legalization movement.
Residents of the state are allowed to use cannabis for both medical treatment and recreation, and anyone over the age of 21 can carry up to an ounce of cannabis. Furthermore, Growers Choice couldn’t be more pleased that people are also permitted to grow their own, all-natural medicine right in their own homes!
Seven more states have legalized cannabis for unregistered self-medication and enjoyment:
California,
Washington,
Oregon,
Nevada,
Alaska,
Maine,
and Massachusetts.
Fun fact: did you know recreational cannabis has been legal in Alaska since the 1970s? They were way ahead of the game!
About 23 other states currently have decent medical cannabis laws in place. We’ll say “about”, since the way things have been going, there’s a good chance another state or two will be added to the list between filming this episode and sharing it!
Of the remaining states, cannabis might be allowed for very specific medical conditions – like in Alabama and Mississippi where only people with severe epilepsy can use cannabis products to treat their seizures. Iowa also allows cannabis for epilepsy, but only high-CBD products with less than .3 % THC.
In states where only medical cannabis is legal, many patients still struggle to have their illness added to the list of “Qualifying Conditions”. Though cancer tops almost every list, Colorado only recently added PTSD to their list of acceptable conditions, and despite some good evidence, Alzheimer’s is still absent from many lists.
Advocacy, from regular people as well as lawmakers (and, of course, celebrities) is what brought cannabis this far, and continued support will bring it further. Legalization is on the horizon, and we’re personally looking forward to the day when everyone can treat their illness – or just relax – with a quick vape or a special brownie.
