Facts About Marijuana (New)

Marijuana, the most commonly used illegal drug in America, is going mainstream. Now legal for recreational use in Colorado and Washington, pot seems poised for wider use, too: 21 states allow the possession and use of marijuana for medicinal purposes, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. And legalization campaigns are underway in Oregon, California and even Alaska.

But just how much do you know about the wacky weed and its odd effects? How exactly does marijuana provide its high, and who discovered the effects of smoking the plant in the first place?

Marijuana, the most commonly used illegal drug in America, is going mainstream. Now legal for recreational use in Colorado and Washington, pot seems poised for wider use, too: 21 states allow the possession and use of marijuana for medicinal purposes, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. And legalization campaigns are underway in Oregon, California and even Alaska.

But just how much do you know about the wacky weed and its odd effects? How exactly does marijuana provide its high, and who discovered the effects of smoking the plant in the first place? Read on for some of the stranger facts about cannabis consumption.

1. Mythical origins

The hippie generation did not discover pot. But the drug’s true origins remain a bit murky.

For example, one source, the Drug Enforcement Administration Museum in Arlington, Virginia, states that the oldest written references to cannabis date back to 2727 B.C., when the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung supposedly discovered the substance and used it medicinally.

But there’s one problem with this putative fact: Shen Nung, if he existed, was not the emperor of China. The first emperor of a unified China was Qin Shi Huang, who was born around 260 B.C. — significantly later than the supposed Shen Nung. Nor is it entirely clear where or how this Shen Nung recorded his medicinal marijuana experiments. The earliest examples of written Chinese characters date to the Shang dynasty, between 1200 B.C. and 1050 B.C., when oracles carved symbols on bones and turtle shells. Though the story of Shen Nung permeates pot histories online, his existence seems to be more marijuana myth than fact.

Still, the Chinese deserve some credit. The ancient Taiwanese were using hemp fibers to decorate pottery about 10,000 years ago, according to “The Archaeology of Ancient China” (Yale University Press, 1968).

But the identity of the first person to discover pot’s intoxicating effects is lost to prehistory.

Welcome back to the Growers Choice Get Growing Video Series! Today, we’re talking about auto-flowering seeds. These special little guys can make your gardening experience a whole lot less stressful, and Growers Choice has six fantastic auto-flowering strains to choose from.

Let’s jump right in.

Auto-flowering seeds are great because there’s one less step you need to worry about during the life cycle. Thanks to cross-breeding with a unique type of cannabis, auto-flowering seeds “automatically” switch from the vegetative to the flowering stage when they’re ready to start producing flowers.

If you’ve grown regular cannabis seeds before, or if you’ve done your research, you’ll know cannabis plants will not begin to flower as long as they are getting more sunlight each day than darkness. If you’re using a grow room, you’ve been told to keep your lights on between 18 and 24 hours a day for the first few weeks (or even months) of the plant’s life cycle.

This non-flowering stage is important, because your plant needs to direct all its resources to getting big and strong before it starts making flowers. Otherwise, the stalk and branches won’t be able to support the weight of the buds.

With auto-flowering seeds, you don’t need to worry about picking the right time, or changing the lighting. After two or three weeks in the vegetative stage, they’ll start to flower on their own.

So, what about light?

When growing auto-flowering strains, most gardeners leave the lighting at 18 or 24 hours for the entire life cycle of their plants. This might seem like a lot of energy, but another cool thing about auto-flowering strains is that they’re ready for harvest just 7 to 13 weeks after germination. To compare, regular cannabis plants take between 3 and 4 months from seed to harvest.

How do they manage this magical transformation?

Auto-flowering seeds are capable of this amazing feat because they have been cross-bred with Cannabis Ruderalis. Another type in addition to indica and sativa, Ruderalis cannabis comes from Russia, where the weather is cooler and the summers are shorter. Because of this different growing season, the plants evolved to complete their life cycle more quickly – in order to beat the early winter frost.

Combining indicas and sativas with ruderalis doesn’t change the THC or CBD content of the strains, nor does it change flavor or resin production. What it does do is make the plants smaller. Because ruderalis plants are rarely more than two feet tall, a sativa-ruderalis hybrid will not reach the 6 feet a pure sativa could. Rather it might max out at about 4 feet. Indica hybrids will be a bit shorter.

From his sidewalk vantage point in front of an outdoor equipment store in downtown Durango, Colo., Matthew Marinseck has seen a transformation in this mountain resort town.

The picturesque town near the New Mexico border, once a vibrant, upscale community dotted with luxury hotels, is being overrun by panhandlers – thanks, in part, to the legalization of marijuana.

The town suddenly became a haven for recreational pot users, drawing in transients, panhandlers and a large number of homeless drug addicts, according to officials and business owners. Many are coming from New Mexico, Arizona and even New York.

“Legalized marijuana has drawn a lot of kids here from other states and the impact has not all been good,” said Marinseck, 58, while holding a cardboard sign asking for “help.”

Several people holding cardboard signs could be seen along the streets of Durango now. Some just ask for marijuana, or imply that’s what they want with a photo of a green pot leaf. But it’s not just pot users being drawn to Durango.

“[The] city really started freaking out when they started seeing needles in the streets” said Marinseck, a self-avowed former hippie.

Caleb Preston, a store manager in a gift shop and a former “street entertainer,” said the homeless and panhandling issue in Durango has gotten out of hand since the state legalized marijuana.

“Just this year there has been a major influx of people between 20 to 30 who are just hanging out on the streets,” Preston said. “The problem is while many are pretty mellow, there are many more who are violent.”

Preston said he’s become accustomed to kicking out vagrants who perch themselves in front of his store.

“Most of the kids here are from out of state, and I would say it has a lot to do with the legalized pot,” said Preston.

He said he’s also noticed an uptick in crime in the area. Shoplifting, he said, has become a major problem in Durango and business owners are becoming fed up.

The city’s Business Improvement District held a meeting May 12 to review the results of a survey completed by local businesses on how to address the panhandling issue, which has become an urgent matter as the city enters its busy summer tourist season.

Among the suggestions were stricter laws for panhandling and loitering, strategic placement of obstacles such as bistro tables and flower boxes to discourage sitting and lying on sidewalks. They also proposed launching a campaign discouraging tourists to give money to the pan handlers. A rudimentary effort is already in place with handwritten signs encouraging donations be made to charities that help the homeless rather than handing panhandlers’ money directly.

Items needed:
1/2 cup of vegetable oil (canola and coconut oil works too, actually higher fat content for the thc to extract into)
7 grams of cannabis grinded
cooking pot of your choice
candy thermometer
strainer or cheesecloth
airtight glass and spatula

-Heat oil to 280 degrees
-Add in cannabis
-Cook on low at 250 degrees or just not over 280 for 1-2 hours
-Strain into the glass jar
-Seal and refrigerate or put in a dark spot

When chef Scott Durrah is teaching a weekend class on cooking with cannabis, he knows how to read his audience.

“Do we all have our coffee and our sativa?” Durrah asked the students who assembled for his Simply Cooking class on Aug. 6. “Today we’re going to be using a little bit of Bruce Banner, so it’s a nice little sativa.”

Durrah, who owns restaurant Jezebel’s and marijuana shop Simply Pure in Denver’s LoHi neighborhood, peppered his inaugural class with general tips as he taught those in attendance to make a couple THC-infused Jamaican dishes. His advice was thoughtful, and often backed up with concrete examples from his own experience in the kitchen.

“The strain you use has a huge impact on the flavor of your oils,” Durrah said. “For instance, Sour Diesel’s a very tough strain to cook with, because it has a very heavy flavor that lingers … It’s a very hard flavor to mask.”

Once you’re cooking with the right strain, you also want to make sure you’re able to taste the cannabis, Durrah said.

How to grow marijuana seeds with 100% success rate. Day #1

I have tried many other seed methods such as the paper towel method and too many things can go wrong especially if it’s your first time.

This is a fool proof way to pop seeds and be sure they will grow after the marijuana seed has “cracked.”

If the marijuana seeds splits open like a clam shell it will grow into a seedling, if not I still plant them and have had about a 50% success rate.

The seed strains we are popping are Northern lights x big bud, skunk #11, LSD, white lavender and northern flame.
