Over the past 20 years, Franco Loja and Arjan Roskam, known as the “Kings of Cannabis,” have made millions of dollars scouring the world for unique strains of weed to breed and then sell.

Now, they’ve turned their sights on Equatorial Africa, specifically the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as their next gold mine — and a way to revolutionize the cannabis industry.

“Equatorial Africa is one the best preserved because of the wars, the lack of infrastructure, political unrest. All these situations created isolation there,” Loja explained. “So that’s where we’re going.”

Loja and Roskam built their global powerhouse on inbred strains of cannabis called “landraces” that they’ve collected from all over the world — Argentina, Australia, and Brazil, just to name a few spots. Without these strains, the duo’s various breeding enterprises, Amsterdam coffeeshops, and even distribution centers wouldn’t exist.

VICE News met up with the “Kings of Cannabis” for a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to hunt for one of the rarest species of Cannabis yet, the original Congolese landrace.

Cannibis sativa or marijuana / hemp is a wild plant or weed (pun unintended!) in India. It grows throughout the country, as a pesky roadside plant. Here, along this highway headed north, to the Himalaya, the marijuana plants grow as tall as 9 or even 11 feet and line the entire 300 kilometer road.

So common is the bhang plant that no one gives it a second glance and no one stops to harvest their own supply either! Instead, they would prefer the mangos that are ripening on the orchards alongside the highway… See the brightly coloured sheets on the litchi trees? Those are to keep away the marauding parakeets!

California’s law is typical: It says it’s illegal to consume, smoke, eat or vape cannabis in public – or even to open a package containing it. But the Golden State now has a brand new venue, led by a Cordon Bleu-trained chef, where people can partake in pot outside their homes. Michelle Miller reports.

Marijuana Grow Operations & Potential Occupational Exposure Risks

As more states legalize the use of medical and recreational marijuana, also known as cannabis, commercial grow operations and extraction facilities have become a rapidly growing business in many parts of the country. This multibillion dollar industry already employees thousands of workers and if growth projections are accurate, could employee hundreds of thousands over the next few years.

Much of the marijuana produced comes from indoor marijuana grow operations (MGOs). Many of these facilities can pose unique health and safety risks for their workers. For example, the warm and humid conditions utilized in many grow operations can support the growth of mold. Inhalation exposure to elevated levels of mold can cause allergies, act as a respiratory irritant, trigger an asthma attack in some people with the condition, and some types of mold can even cause opportunistic infections in people with a weakened or suppressed immune system.

Exposure to other potential allergens, dust and particulate matter (PM) is another concern. Workers could also come in contact with various pesticides and fertilizers used by grow operations. Elevated levels of carbon dioxide are produced in some facilities to enhance plant growth. Depending on the source of the CO2, carbon monoxide (CO), various combustion gases and PM may also be present. Reduced ventilation rates to enhance CO2 concentrations can also lead to a buildup of airborne pollutants.

The proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at grow operations and extraction facilities can help protect workers from inhalation risks and dermal exposures. However, the use of latex gloves can be an issue for some employees sensitive to latex allergens. Employees should also have eye and skin protection from the UV light produced by grow lamps.

A secret bathroom door leading to a greenhouse where 500 marijuana plants were being grown was discovered by the police in Cagliari on Tuesday. As shown in the police footage, a gun and bullets were also found in the 500-square-metre warehouse.
