Hello, my name is Dr. Rajy Abulhosn, Medical Director here at Confirm BioSciences. Today I want to take some time to discuss a drug that many people are familiar with – Cannabis, more commonly known as Marijuana. Marijuana is a greenish-gray-brown mixture of flowers, seeds, stems and leaves.

This plant grows wild in many tropical and humid parts of the world and has been cultivated for thousands of years as a source of industrial (hemp) fiber, animal feed, hempseed oil and medicine; as well as for its recreational uses brought on by the main psychoactive chemical it contains, commonly referred to as THC.

Marijuana goes by many names such as weed, pot, bud, herb, grass and Mary Jane.

Marijuana is perhaps in the unique position to be able to claim that it is a stimulant, a depressant and a hallucinogen rolled into one. Different people react differently to marijuana.

What are some side effects of marijuana use?

As a stimulant, marijuana enhances mood, boosts confidence and self esteem and produces feelings of elation. Used often enough, it can cause a person to become overly talkative, lively and ecstatic.
As a depressant, marijuana may have the opposite effect, acting like a mild sedative, causing a person to become drowsy or overly relaxed. Some users may retreat often becoming silent and withdrawn.

As a hallucinogen, marijuana makes everything around the user distorted often causing a heightened sense of sound and colors.
Other side effects of marijuana may include dizziness, depression, enhanced appetite, slurred speech and short term memory impairment.

Currently, 28 states plus Washington D.C. have legalized the use of medical marijuana and a handful of states have legalized marijuana for recreational use as well. However, just because it’s legal to use in many states, does not mean that employers find it acceptable for their employees to use marijuana.

Confirm BioSciences offers quite a few different options for marijuana testing including our DrugConfirm Advanced urine drug test cup, our SalivaConfirm Premium saliva drug tests as well as our THC dip cards.
