How America lost the war on Marijuana

How America lost the war on Marijuana: Within a decade, the U.S. went from cracking down on marijuana use to becoming a $47 billion industry. But the road to having dispensaries on every corner, the smell of weed smoke freely in the air and criminal records expunged didn’t happen overnight. It took a couple of states leading the charge – Colorado and Washington in 2012 – to then ripple into near nation-wide legalization. There are now 21 states where cannabis has been legalized for recreational use. Every corner of New York City , for example, is an assault on the nostrils with people lighting up a joint as early as before or just after their morning commute. However, not everyone is on board with the marijuana revolution. Doctors and advocates have highlighted concerns about excessive use of cannabis in high risk groups, especially the youth. DailyMail.com has examined when exactly America’s war on drugs changed, the challenges the industry faces and the future of the billion-dollar business.

New York Agrees To Legalize Recreational Marijuana | NBC News NOW

HOW WE GOT HERE: Cashing in on legalized marijuana

Michigan became the first state in the Midwest to legalize weed in November 2018, ending decades of marijuana prohibition.

Cannabis use has been becoming more and more mainstream in the Mitten state since medical marijuana was legalized a decade ago. But the vague 2008 law resulted in legal mayhem for medical marijuana patients and caregivers — and the industry was mostly underground.

Once lawmakers added regulations in 2016 the medical marijuana market went corporate, setting the stage for the 2018 legalization vote.

Now more than half a year after Michigan voters approved the ballot proposal, there are still no retail stores where people can legally buy marijuana due to bureaucratic processes. But that doesn’t mean people aren’t smoking it if they’ve got it.

State officials recently issued rules that will guide the start of the industry — and some predict the first sales will happen in the first months of 2020.

Marijuana and criminal questions

Legalized marijuana is already changing the legal landscape and it’s creating challenges in other states. Colorado recently reduced the number of plants people can grow and strengthened penalties in hopes of weakening black market sales. In San Francisco and Seattle, past misdemeanor convictions for pot are now being cleared. People were being barred from jobs and public benefits for something that’s now legal. 5 Investigates’ Mike Beaudet finds that legalization here in Massachusetts hasn’t gotten rid of the tensions between users and law enforcement.
