Minnesota became the 23rd state to legalize the use of recreational cannabis, leading to questions about how a rise in marijuana use could affect the economy, federal legislation and national health.
Marijuana becomes legal in Illinois, the largest US midwestern state, as 2020 is rung in with shops opening at 6 am to support what is expected to be a record turnout for recreational cannabis. “I think this is groundbreaking,” Jackie Ryan tells AFP after completing her first purchase at Sunnyside dispensary. “Finally, Illinois is following suit with other states and it’s just really exciting.”
