During the 16th century, cannabis was introduced to the Western Hemisphere by Spaniards who brought it to Chile, primarily for fiber production. In North America, the Spanish also cultivated cannabis, mainly as hemp on various farms. In the early colonial period, hemp emerged as a significant crop for farmers. Alongside tobacco, hemp became a major export long before the American Revolution. This began in 1611 when the first settlers of Jamestown, Virginia, transported a few plants across the Atlantic. By 1619, King James I instructed these American colonists in Jamestown to intensify their efforts to benefit England.
The Virginia Company, which oversaw Jamestown, directed landowners to cultivate and send 100 hemp plants to support England’s needs. Over time, colonists expanded hemp farming to bolster England’s presence in the Americas. Cannabis cultivation played a crucial role in shaping the early days of what would become the United States. Even George Washington grew hemp at Mount Vernon as one of his primary crops. During the 18th and 19th centuries, hemp was extensively utilized for producing rope and fabric across the United States.
After cannabis reached New England in 1629, it remained an indispensable crop in North America from that point until after the Civil War.
Hemp was a cornerstone of both colonial life and the early economic strategies of the United States. In 1775, Kentucky began cultivating hemp, and by the 19th century, large-scale hemp farms had emerged in states like Mississippi, Georgia, California, South Carolina, and Nebraska. Beyond its industrial uses, cannabis gained recognition in medicine. By 1839, Irish physician William O’Shaughnessy introduced cannabis to Western medicine after observing its medicinal applications in India. He demonstrated its effectiveness in alleviating muscle spasms and pain, as well as treating conditions like migraines and sleep disorders. Cannabis quickly became a common remedy for pain relief until aspirin’s invention later diminished its prominence.
During this period, efforts to regulate medicine sales intensified. States enacted laws to address issues such as mislabeled drugs, undisclosed narcotics in medicines, and improper sales practices. These regulations often required clear labeling of dangerous substances or restricted their sale to licensed pharmacies with a doctor’s prescription. Some laws also prohibited selling these medicines to minors and limited prescription refills. These measures aimed to ensure consumer safety while controlling the distribution of potentially harmful drugs like cannabis.
In a bulletin from the United States Department of Agriculture during this period, it was reported that 29 states had enacted laws concerning cannabis. States such as Wisconsin and Louisiana mandated a doctor’s prescription for cannabis sales, while others, including Nebraska and New York, required labeling but did not list restricted drugs. In New York, cannabis was initially classified as a poison under a law passed in 1860 after several suicides were linked to substances later deemed poisons.

Watering less allows your plants to grow more in search for water , and also allows you the ability to add more water later if it wasn’t enough . You can always give more , but its more difficult to take back .

Giving your plants less light intensity can allow for less stress , sometimes running high intensity lights on 100% , you are actually pushing your plants much harder than you need to.

I have found myself at times doing a little too much , especially as someone who makes videos and content , it begins to add up quickly between life , relationships , work , and so on . Whether it may be too many plants , too many tents , breeding , or different grow styles and techniques .

It’s important to try new things , but in moderation . If you start a new run , maybe try 1 or 2 new methods or techniques things to add , rather than trying to reinvent the wheel .

Environment is the key to any successful run . You could have the greatest , highest quality strain or clone in the world , and if your environment isn’t within the ideal parameters , it simply will not turn out good . Whether it be too much heat , too much humidity , too much fluctuation , these are where almost all problems start in grows . Proper environment leads to higher quality , higher yield , and better runs .

Cannabis is simply just a plant . It will grow and do it’s thing regardless of how much time you spend , or effect you try to have on it . It can be better to sometimes step away, and allow it to grow how it needs , because the plant knows best . You can sometimes create more problems growing by defoliating too much , or babying every little thing , when really all we have to do is give them the right environment and let them grow .

As I mentioned before , genetics are going to be a huge factor in the success of your grow , it could mean whether or not you actually even make it to harvest. Simply put , there are genetics and strains that are known to be unstable or finicky , and if you are a grower just starting out , I would highly recommend to avoid those .

Something else I have learned is that you truly to do not need the best of the best to get started . If you are just growing 1 or 2 plants , there are plenty of grow lights , tents , and equipment on the market that are cheap and will be absolutely fine for personal growing . You should be able to get your first run going for less than $500 .

When harvesting & drying , you will hear everyone say the same thing . cloudy trichomes , hang dry for 10-14 days . I rarely check the trichomes until AFTER harvest .

For drying I aim for 60% humidity , for just about as long as I can go. But once a plant is dry you need to be ready to trim , regardless if it is day 7 or day 12. Once dry I remove the buds from the jar for 20-30 mins a day until there is no smell of chlorophyll .

I prefer to have a little more moisture and burp it , than drying too much to begin with .

Personally something I have noticed and need to improve on , is feeding young plants and seedlings more . I myself underestimated just how important it is for strengthening your plants branches and helping overall health and yield .

When starting out in organics , I learned that more soil is better . Its much easier to keep a happy plant in a larger container when doing organics .

For me when I started , I tried growing in 3 and 5 gallon pots , and my plants were not as happy or healthy as they are now .

When you are growing with bottle nuts , you simply mix up whatever amount of teaspoons or ML per gallon , and feed your plant . Hit them with some cal mag and up the feeding. If you overfeed , simply flush your plants .

In organic , it’s not quite so simple . The goal is actually to feed the plants through the soil , And as a lot of you will probably already know , it takes time for organic material to break down and become food for a plant .

The legalization of marijuana is just around the corner.

The market has been projected to be worth more than $10 billion. For some, that suggests the marijuana industry is going to be a gold rush – that is until you look inside.

It is a labyrinth of rules, regulations, background checks, banks that won’t give you an account, a reliance on investors and there are no guarantees you’ll get a license. The government won’t be propping you up; in fact it will be watching you very closely to ensure your products meet exacting standards and that everything you do conforms to the law.

There are, however, entrepreneurs who think it’s worth the risk. And risk is the operative word. Just because marijuana and the production of it will become legal in Canada, it doesn’t mean it’s legal anywhere else except Uruguay. The United States has already stated that if you work in or invest in marijuana you could be banned from entry to the US for life.

We invited medical marijuana entrepreneur Justin Dhaliwal to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the process, the risks and the benefits of obtaining a license to produce cannabis.

In this video link, I will be explaining how to prepare seeds for germination and how to increase your chances of germinating older seeds.

What do you do first?
When you start with seeds there are a few things we like to do before we actually place the seed in soil or any other medium of your choice.

The first thing we want to do with our seeds is inspect them. Look for any signs that may indicate a lower chance of germination. The first thing you want to look at is the shell of the seed. If the shell is cracked, it is likely not going to germinate and is best to throw away.

Some other indicators of the likelihood of germination include the age of the seed. Seeds that have not aged, or have recently been harvested from a plant and have not dried, have a lower chance of germinating than mature seeds or older seeds that have been stored in an ideal environment.

If a seed is old but has been stored properly, certain nutrients can be used to increase the likelihood of germination. This process will be explained further.

Dear William,

Your email of March 13, 2019 sent to the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch, within the Ministry of Attorney General, has been forwarded to the Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Secretariat, within the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, for response. Thank you for your questions regarding the possession of cannabis seeds and cultivation of cannabis plants.

You have asked where to obtain non-medical cannabis seeds. Seeds can legally be purchased in-person from BC Cannabis Stores (https://www.bccannabisstores.com/pages/store-locations), online at the BC Cannabis Stores website, or in-person at licensed private retailers. The availability of seeds varies by location.(https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/employment-business/business/liquor-regulation-licensing/bc-liquor-licensed-establishment-locations)

Adults 19+ can possess up to 30 seeds in public and possess up to 1,000 seeds in a location other than a public place (for example, at home). It is legal to germinate up to four seeds at any one time. A cannabis plant is classified as a plant from the moment it germinates.

Adults 19+ can legally grow up to four non-medical cannabis plants per dwelling house. If two adults live in the same dwelling, the legal limit of a maximum of four plants remains unchanged.

While adults 19+ can legally grow up to four non-medical cannabis plants per dwelling house, there are additional provisions outlined in the Cannabis Control and Licensing Act that must be adhered to. For example, cannabis plants cannot be visible from a public place off the property, such as parks, streets, sidewalks, sports fields, and K-12 school properties. For more information about growing non-medical cannabis at home please visit https://cannabis.gov.bc.ca/.

Local governments can also further restrict growing non-medical cannabis at home under existing powers to establish bylaws. You may wish to contact your local government to find out if they have additional restrictions in place.

#3: Transplanting Your Cannabis Seeds Into Pots

The next step after planting your seeds into Jiffys is to transplant them into pots. We can’t do this until the seeds have sprouted and roots have grown through the Jiffy.

In this video demonstration we have seeds that have sprouted and are showing their true leaves, which indicates that the seeds have started to root, but have yet to grow roots through the Jiffy. We decided to transplant anyways because the seedlings have begun to stretch due to the light being placed too far from the plants; forcing them to reach for the light.

Lights should be kept about 6” from the top of the plant to reduce the risk of stretching. Older lights can also cause stretching because they tend to emit less intensive light. If your light bulbs are over a year old, you should consider replacing them.

Before we start the transplanting process, we want to make sure that the Jiffy plug has been soaked in a B vitamin solution; this will reduce the risk of the medium surrounding the roots from drying out and causing extreme stress or even death.

Once the Jiffy plug has been soaked we can then proceed transplanting into pots. Because two of the plants have stretched and two had slow growth, we want to take this opportunity to have them grow evenly. We can do this by placing the plants that have stretched lower in the pot, while keeping the shorter plants closer to the top.
We will start with the stretched plants by putting a bit of soil at the bottom of the pot, make sure it is enough to cover the drainage holes. We then place the Jiffy at the bottom and fill the rest of the pot with soil. Placing the stretched plant closer to the bottom of the pot will reduce the height of the plant above the soil, making it look smaller in height.

Make sure to adjust how your plant sits in the pot at this point. Try not to compress the soil too much while doing this. Once you are satisfied with how your plant looks use the same B vitamin solution to water the new medium you have transplanted your plant into.
Make sure to water the soil surrounding the Jiffy and don’t water too close to the stalk of the plant. This will reduce the risk of rotting the stalk and killing your plant. This will also help reduce the risk of the Jiffy plug drying out before you can water it again. Continue the same process for any stretched plants that you may have.

The same process can be used for shorter plants. The only difference is that you would place the plant closer to the top of the pot, filling the rest of the pot with soil. Adjust the plant and water in the same manner. All plants should be the same height, give or take a couple of centimeters, once you have finished transplanting.

Keep a close eye on the plants for the next 24 hours to make sure the medium does not dry out entirely. You should have to water again within a 48 hour period. Continue using a B vitamin solution for the second watering.
